Desert

Stars were scattered here and there across the clear night sky

A small grey hawk spread its wings to soar and fly

A faint ring circled perfectly around the glowing full moon

Casting light among the dusty dunes

The single call of a coyote triggered more to stray

While the quiet sound of a hooting howl cooed away

Creepy crawlies scampered across giant mounds of sand

Creating trails that could be seen all across the land

One colossal snake slithered sideways down a hill

As that same small hawk eyed it with pure skill

Several jackrabbits hopped into the moonlight

Unknowing that they too could be a bite

Two horned lizards stared at each other with evil eyes

A fight to the death would win the female prize

The coyotes’ calls and the owl’s coos left in silence

Causing the mood to rise and tense

Each creature stopped and stared as a clapping sound boomed

As thick black clouds suddenly grew and consumed

A sudden strike of pure white light struck the ground

Causing every living thing dash around

The gentle sound of pitter patter spread along the earth

Which would eventually cause a new rebirth

Again, again the thunder roared

As the ground began to store and hoard

All the animals had disappeared

Except that hawk who never feared

It flew and soared through the rain

Who knows when it will return in vain
