My River

My life is a river.

Sinuous and smooth.

Until you feel the current

And I begin to move.

Running, dancing,

Tripping over stones

A single destination

But I’m never all alone.

I hiss and I spit,

But I refresh and I soothe

I calm and I upset

And I am frequently used.

I keep on going

Growing older and growing wise

My body grows wider

And I lengthen in size

I deepen, I shallow

I whisper, I scream

I’m a torrent, a wonder

A nightmare, a dream

I keep going and going

Always wishing to be enough

I keep fasting and slowing

And I am known to be tough

But still I am river

Sometimes sinuous and smooth

Bothered by no one

But people who want the truth
