Addiction

At first it’s now and then,

Just when I’m feeling bad.

It comforts me inside.

So I don’t feel quite so sad.

I think, “I’m in control,

Yes, I can start and stop,

Whenever that I want.

This won’t be hard to drop.”

But now when I’m alone.

Its always on my mind,

It beckons me to come,

To forget my fear and find.

The peace I long to know.

It promises to fill.

At once I take it in.

And forget that it can kill.

For just a little while.

I feel the peace I need.

But soon it dissipates.

And it leaves the need to feed.

Oh, how to stop the tide,

I’m being swept away.

This thing is sinking in,

It grows larger every day.

I try to slake its lust,

To feed this inner beast.

The pain is just too much,

For it feels the need to feast.

Too late I realize,

I can’t escape its grasp.

With this blade put to my wrist,

This breath will be my last.
