What is depressing our (us) teens?

My bet is the world. Everyday it gets worse. Untill reading a fantasy book is prefered over the newspaper. Anything we see on T.V. or on video games we know is not 'real'. But we want it to be real because the world today is not what we hoped? Is what we need a reality check? Or, if we don't like the world the way it is...why not change it? Can we even do that? Or should those of us who can't just grin and bear it be all dosed up on a bunch of pills we don't need? What is truely wrong with teens today? Nothing? Lack of hope? Are we being let down? Because everthing that is cool is not real, or is not possible to reach unless you were rich? Ugh.

hmm..lets see .. I think parents ignore their kids because they drive them insane and they can't do anything to control them anymore with the exception of putting them on Ritalin I think kids need their butt's whooped .. I know that sounds retarded but kids today know they can pretty much do whatever they want. so yeah I do think parents ignore their kids to avoid conflict and the end result is a dysfunctional child that wants to fit in somewhere...emo perfect example I know kids that say they're emo and they say they're bi and cut themselves to fit in with a certain crowd ..We need to teach our kids to be leaders not followers..ok before anyone says anything I know all emo kids do not cut and are not bi but calling yourself emo is bad enough.. Why do you have to fit into a group with other kids you can like the same music without trying to look alike/act alike..one more thing don't say the media has nothing to do with it.That's been going on forever from ppl pretending to be the kids from grease to acting/dressing like Madonna etc. It just so happens kids idols are getting worse

My bio dad is never there...but demands my respect...and my step dad is the best dad in the world...he does every thing he can to make me happy..and I take it for granted a lot..so, for those who have difficult parents sit and think for a sec..are they really trying? And if they aren't, know that one day you will do much better than them hopfully.

Depression in children is something I am definitely worried about with my baby. We are a military family where the war directly affects us, and being constantly worried about whether or not my husband will come home. Right now we don't have to worry because we are stationed in the states, so thank goodness. The economy is slowing down, families are struggling and that puts a lot of hardship in the family. Later down the road though, when you are out of your situation, you will look back and know exactly what depressed you when you were younger. For me, it was all the depressing music I listened to, and I admit it was my parents too. They did the best they knew how to do, now all I can do, is not raise my child the way the raised me.

I think it is because of the media and music some teens listen to. Hollywood movies glamorize suicide and depression, and bands sing about it. If you listen long enough, its going to depress you. The world is depressing, the war, the economy, financial struggles are a huge part of stress, and when families get stressed, their children will get stressed. Movies about young thirteen year old girls falling in love, they are trying to make our youth grow up too fast. Then when they break up, they have to deal with very grown up issues, they feel the same pain and some couples do after a divorce.
