I've known about it for quite a while, but it kind of seems so much like goth. Other genres of music that created labels are, gothic rock, punk rock & hip-hop.

I had never heard the term until I joined this site. I normally labeled everything I saw as far as attitude and dress in my environment as gothic. It's a word. A word of little to no consequence. I don't pretend to understand the social behaviors that seem to have weaved as a complex fabric in such a widespread and atypical manner or why people want to classify themselves and consciously adhere to bizarre mannerisms and habitual behaviors. It's entirely perplexing. Though as are all trends to my eyes...All I see are gel pens, pokemon cards, and beanie babies all over again – just with eye shadow and razors. I would believe that it will die out as an absurd parody of its origins soon enough. No telling how much more nonsensical the next thing is that takes up residence in light of its eviction.

Just another reason for guys to act like girls without being gay. Emo is short for "emotional" so really it's not much of a stereotype since just about everyone in the world has emotions of some sort.

I agree all the labeling origins don't really make too much sense if any at all.

It comes from the word emotive, which is really to provoke an emotion, which ‘emo’ music does. It started out as a genre and has now become a derogatory term and a stereotype it is ridiculous.

It's a genre of music. People have really turned the actual meaning of emo around. IT'S MUSIC. I really dunno why people call each other emo. It's like saying, "Well, you're music." x] Like that makes sense. That's what I would say. Reply back and say, "I'm music?" Cause I've been called emo. Oh wow, that really hurts. The term was originally started by a band. I can't recall the name, but I know I like em lol. But people have been mistaken as emo, when they are actually a label called "scene". Quite frankily, I dunno why people label each other in the worst place. I'm not a soup can, so why are you labeling me? That's I how I really feel about it...
