I just got back from there. I didn't wander the big parts, just basically stayed close to Port Authority (on 42nd) but managed to walk down to 13th & 2nd. DO NOT BUY SHIT. It's overpriced. It's hectic. The taxis honk at every fuckin' thing.
Don't stay during the day. It's boring as fuck. Nighttime is where you want to be in New York. With all the bums, homeless people, drunks, prostitutes, & you can get yourself a good 10 bucks on a good night with a pack of smokes. I actually met up with Dave, who'd been in prison for the past 11 years & spent 40 days in NYC LOVING it. & Gesus With a Shapeup who's going to Florida to find his dad, then LA to get out his music business. He even has a site (haven't checked it out); WaveSpace -- a website for people to decide what they want to do.
Watch out for the pedophiles, make sure you have comfortable shoes, take a bus instead of a cab, & make sure you have contacts in several different places when you wander into the neighbourhoods. Also, make sure you're in shape. LOTS of unchained dogs run in the back-alleys, but overall it's a groovy place to dig. ESPECIALLY Central Park & homeless shelters. Food & shower for free? FUCK YES! Watching the drunk bums fight each other is more entertaining in person, too. :)
Best of all, you can shout & talk/mumble to yourself throughout all the streets & no one will give a fuck except some glances. They're used to it, & from stories, have seen much worse. So it's paradise for any weirdo/freak. I'd go back in a month or so if I could.
