Ok I need some help here guys

The following is my short film script. I would like you to read it and then answer the question at the bottom. Thankkss :D

The following script is copyrighted The Northern Film School 2009 (C)

final draft

scene 1: int. kitchen day

JANE is moving into her new home. She enters the modestly sized kitchen with her friend LUCY, who is helping her move, both carrying a few shopping bags in each arm. They are both young and smiling excitedly. Jane turns on the light switches but only one works. The kitchen is dark in places as the window lets in a minimal amount of light.

lucy

Oh my God, it was mad. I could not stop laughing.

JANE

Ahh, awesome.

Jane stands and looks around the room.

LUCY

You have to come to Oasis with everyone tonight!

JANE

Yeah?

LUCY

Yeah, it's like, two tiered, it's massive in there. And the music is sick.

JANE

Ah, cool.

They put the bags on the counter and Jane begins to explore cupboards and draws. Jane opens the fridge and starts putting the food shopping away.

LUCY

(Watching her)

And like, last time, the lads came with us and got proper drunk it was so funny. And oh my God, the other night, we went to Rachel's house and apparently I brought this lad with me but I was so hammered I went to bed. And apparently he was like sitting there chatting. I don't even remember!

JANE

(Laughing)

What were you doing?

LUCY

Aha, I dunno.

We see Jane go back and forth between the fridge and the bags as she puts all of the food away. When she has finished she closes the fridge, goes back to the empty bags and flattens them.

LUCY

I still don't even know who he was. Poor boy!

Jane turns around and as she puts the bags in the bin she sees that the fridge door is open. She closes it again. She walks over to the window and looks out.

LUCY

So, you coming tonight?

JANE

I dunno.

LUCY

Come on, it'll be fun. You've got to come and meet everyone round here. They're a right bunch.

JANE

Can I not wait till I've settled in?

LUCY

Jane, you'll be alright, just come out and you'll fuckin' love it. Oh and there's this lad I want you to meet! He moved here like a couple of weeks ago or something. What was his name again?

(Whilst Lucy is speaking) Jane turns around and we see that the fridge door is open again. She pauses for a few seconds. Jane walks up and closes the fridge slowly. She frowns slightly. She turns around to Lucy but she is looking up at the ceiling trying to remember the guys name.

LUCY

Rich! Was it Rich? Yeah, it was Rich.

Jane opens her mouth to speak to her but there is a loud blast of pop music and Lucy stops to answer her phone.

LUCY

Hiya!

She smiles at Jane and speaks into the phone, turning to look out of the window. Jane smiles back weakly and sits down on a stool.

LUCY

(To phone)

I'm alright. (Pause). Yeah. (Pause) (giggling) Yeah.

Jane sits watching Lucy, rapping her fingers on the table. It is clear that her conversation will not be a short one.

We CUT to Jane filling the kettle with water and then turning it on. Time has passed. Lucy is still on the phone.

LUCY

Yeah, I thought it would be. (Pause). Aw. (Pause). What you doing then? (Pause) Aw good. (Pause) Aw that's lovely.

Jane stares at the boiling kettle which is gradually getting louder. Slowly the volume of the boiling water exceeds that of Lucy's voice and eventually that is all we can hear. The kettle shakes violently but Lucy, who is still on the phone, looking out of the window and twirling her hair, seems not to notice. Jane continues to stare, her face growing more concerned. The noise reaches an impossibly loud level and water is starting to escape. Jane puts her hand on the kettle but immediately pulls back.

JANE

Ow!

She has burnt her hand. Lucy is still looking out of the window seemingly unaware. Water is pouring out on to the counter and the kettle is shaking off it's stand. Jane breathes deeply. We suddenly see a hand on Jane's shoulder. The bell rings on the kettle and the sound dies down. It is Lucy.

LUCY

I've got to go now.

Jane is calming down, looking around at the counter which is slightly damp.

LUCY

You coming out tonight yeah?

Jane nods.

LUCY

Alright, I'll see you later babe.

She hugs Jane, grabs her bag and leaves. Jane is left breathing heavily, still watching the kettle which is emitting a small amount of steam.

Scene 2: INT. Corridor night

JANE has arrived home from work. She closes the door, puts her bag down on a chair and turns on a lamp on a table. She shivers and pulls her coat tighter. She bends down to pick up the post. She lays the letters down on the small table and goes through them. One is addressed to "The Owner". Jane struggles to open the envelope and is forced to rip it. The letter falls out. It slides along the floor, underneath the door and into the kitchen. Jane is hesitant. After a few seconds she steps forward. As soon as she does this, the plumbing creaks. She stops. There is more creaking. The lamp goes out. Jane's breathing becomes heavier and she looks around nervously. The creaking gradually stops. A faint sound of light wind is heard. The gap at the bottom of the door glows yellow, it's source seeming to come from the kitchen. Jane is now panting and shuffles backwards, feeling out for the table in the dark. She tries the lamp which does not work.

INT. LIVING ROOM NIGHT

She gives a slight cry and leaps into the living room, slamming the door behind her. She runs to her radio, turns it on and turns the volume up to full. 'Return To Sender' by Elvis Presley fills the room and the wind can not be heard. Jane's eyes are wide, looking at the door. There is no light except from the radio display. Jane gets on a chair, grabs a cushion and curls herself up, still staring at the door.

scene 3: int. living room night

JANE has fallen asleep. She rests in the same curled up position and the radio is not operating. There is the sound of gentle sobbing. Jane opens her eyes with panic. She listens to it. It is clear the sound is coming from the kitchen. She stands up slowly and puts her hand on the door handle. She opens it and looks into the corridor.

INT. CORRIDOR NIGHT

The letters are scattered across the floor. A street lamp is illuminating a small part of the wall . Jane moves again, very slowly towards the kitchen door. There is no light coming from it but the sobbing is more audible. It is a man's cry. Jane trembles slightly. She extends her arm towards the kitchen door and pauses. With immense effort she opens the door. She freezes.

Sitting at the kitchen table is a very large middle-aged man: BOBBY. Food is scattered all around him, encrusted on his chin and all over his t-shirt. He barely seems to notice Jane, who is shocked and stands there looking at her kitchen. The fridge is wide open and messy. Only the single light is working. Bobby seems to acknowledge Jane. He looks up and stops crying. He smiles meekly. She looks at the house phone on the wall to her right. Bobby stands up, panic stricken. Jane steps back with fear. She notices the letter addressed to "The Owner" at her feet. Bobby's eyes are drawn to it. We see "GREAT VALUE" printed on the letter and the logo of a fast-food chain. With one eye on Bobby, she bends down and picks up the letter. His eyes follow her all the way. She steps towards him. His eyes light up. She walks around the table towards him and stretches out her arm holding the letter. They stand there for a moment looking at each other. Jane is breathing quickly and sweating under her coat. Bobby gently takes the letter and looks at it. He looks back at Jane, moves his chair back and walks out of the kitchen. He does not look back as he opens the front door and paces out into the darkness. Jane releases a deep breath. She picks up the phone and dials 999. Upon hearing the emergency service operator's voice she turns around. All of the lights are now working and all of the food has disappeared. Open mouthed, she hangs up.

The question is: Is it clear that Bobby is the ghost?

That was what I was going for but my tutor thought it would be better to know what the ghost wanted and I wasn't sure if she knew it was the ghost.

Someone made that comment on that youtube video I posted where they were trying to get those girls to flash them.

"those guys are stupid it's 911 not 999"
Then I replied, " It's obvious they don't live in America. Did you ever think maybe the number is different there?"

Yeah, they deleted their comment.

We all know you need help. Just kidding. One error. 911 not 999, but other than that, it's pretty good.

well you did a good job if that was what you wanted. I still say in that last lil part where its just Jane and the ghost you make it just a tad bit more obvious. She felt chills or something.

Yeah I just don't want to make it obvious too early. But I really want to make sure the audience knows that he's the ghost.

actually i had no idea until i read that "everything disappeared" part. But to make it more obvious you could describe him in a more ghostly way. i dunno at first he seemed just like some regular dude who broke into her house and ate her food.
