2012: Movie Review2012, a movie about the predicted end of the world was an interesting film to watch. Starring John Cusack and Chiwetel Ejiofor as the two staring roles, the movie had a lot of different things happening. The movie starts out in early 2009 as we follow Ejiofor's character, a scientist working for the government, as he starts to learn about conditions on the sun that are causing the earths core to become like a giant microwave. We then follow his character and some others through out the next 4 years leading up to the movies main setting date in 2012. The movie then begins to follow Cusacks character, a divorced father and author, who takes his children camping in yellow stone. While there Cusack begins to discover what is happening to the world and tries to get his family to safety among "ships" that the government has built. The special effects in this movie were amont other things amazing. Certain seats had you wondering if they had filmed this on location or done it on a computer, other times however it seemed they were trying to hard and the special effects were lacking in areas smaller budget films even do good on. The story was as expected from a disaster movie with some surprises. With two or three different sub-plots going on it was hard to really create any character development, most of the characters seemed to unrealistic for me to connect with. Cusacks character was the only one in his story that I could really connect with as a father trying to save his family. While opposing him, his two children and ex-wife did a lot to make me think they were not people I could get along with. The movie really picked up for me during any of the scenes that Chiwetel Ejiofor and Oliver Platt were on screen. The back and forth between these actors was great and the whole side of whats ethical in a situation of the world ending was a very interesting thing to watch. I did not like however how Ejiofor's character would, at the most random times, throw in a reffrence about Cusacks character. I thought it was a poor plot device used to bring all of the right characters together at the end. Overall the movie was interesting and I wouldn't mind seeing it again if I did not have to pay. If you are going to see this movie i suggest a matinee, and highly suggest seeing it in IMAX. For 2012 I give it 3 out of 5 stars, for good special effects, and at time good acting. |
