Was that a dream? Sovira wondered the next morning. She wiped her weary eyes in the mirror and gazed at herself. I don’t look any different, she thought. I’m still wearing my pajamas. Surely, he wouldn’t have the nerve to dress me himself.

Oh, who am I kidding? It’s Syth.

She walked out of her room to find Syth. That wasn’t too hard. He was pacing back and forth in the hallway. It reminded her of that time where he had red eyes and was about to bite her. Only this time it was just Syth. No red eyes, no abnormal possessions. Sovira wondered when he’d snap like that again.

“Hey, Syth.” Sovira tried to get his attention. She slightly waved.

He stopped and turned to face her. “Hey. I didn’t know you were awake.”

“Yeah, I’ve just been thinking.”

“About?”

She smiled. “Last night.”

He looked bemused. “What about last night?”

“You know…”

“No…I don’t.”

“Syth. You don’t remember the rooftop…and the meadow?”

“No.” He shook his head.

He still looked confused. Was it only an act? she wondered. If so, he was good.

“What about the silky blue dress?”

“Nope.”

“How did I get in my pajamas?” She pointed to her clothes. “Last night I was wearing a blue dress when I fell asleep.”

“It must have been in your dream, Sovira. You have been having a lot of those lately.”

“Yeah, but…” It seemed so real, she thought. “Why were you pacing back and forth?” She didn’t believe him, so she decided to interrogate.

“I’ve had a lot on my mind.”

“Oh, like what?”

“Nothing important.”

“Okay, then it shouldn’t matter if you tell me.

He chuckled. “I need a shower. And you should get dressed.” He walked off in the direction toward his room.

She let him go. She knew she wasn’t going to get anything out of him. That was typical for Syth. If he was hiding the truth about last night, she would figure it out. She could do it on her own. She didn’t need him.

She got dressed and headed out the door by the garden. She went down the center path. It led to the meadow. Not exactly the way she remembered, but it was the same meadow. It had the mote, the flowers, the tree trunk, and the logs. It was as she remembered, only without the romantic candle-lit dinner set-up.

That meant she was getting somewhere.

She tried to remember that night, but every time she tried, she failed. All she could remember was the rooftop, the meadow, and how they confessed their love for each other. It was real, she kept telling herself. Inside, she believed it was true. She would find a way to make the pieces fit. She loved him, and he loved her. She was sure of it. Why couldn’t he just admit it? Why was he hiding it?

She remembered something he had said to her recently. How he told her he liked to watch her tremble over him. That it was pleasuring for him. Is that why he wouldn’t tell her? Was it because she was with Markus?

She realized then what he was doing. Last night was real. They did confess their love for each other. But that was all he wanted. He only wanted to get it out so that it wasn’t eating at him to confess it. He wanted to pretend everything was normal because she was with Markus. That was all they ever could be, and nothing more. She realized that he was in a more stable condition than she herself was. She could never have come up with that.

She spent the rest of the day by herself. She needed to be alone to sort out her thoughts. Her mind was going wild. She didn’t know what to think or what to do. She was in love with Markus, but now she also felt love for Syth. And Syth loved her. It was a triangle. That was becoming Sovira’s least favorite shape.

She knew what was happening. She was slowly falling out of love with Markus and in love with Syth. That or she was falling into deeper love with Syth. Deeper than she has ever felt for Markus.

Either way, it was disloyalty. It wasn’t like her. She hated that this was happening. If this went on she would break Markus’s heart. She couldn’t do that. Syth was being smart. He knew what they were doing had to end. And as much as she wanted Syth, she would do the same. She’d end it.

With all the drama, Sovira could hardly think straight. She had a huge migraine from the clashing thoughts in her mind. It was like her thoughts were playing bumper cars. Her brain would explode if she didn’t get the thoughts out. She needed to talk to Syth. And if he kept denying it, she would get physical. Not that punching him would have any effect. But she would find someway to get it out of him.

She walked straight into Syth’s room without knocking.

“We need to talk,” she said. He opened his mouth to say something, but she spoke first. “I know the truth, so stop denying it.” He only smirked. “It wasn’t a dream,” she stated confidently. He wouldn’t get her this time.

“So it was a nightmare? I’m hurt,” He said and held his chest.

“Syth, it was real,” she rose her voice. She was tired of his games. They shouldn’t have to hide anything from each other. Especially not this. Why did he even bother doing all that last night if he was going to pretend it never happened?

“It was all in your dream, Sovira. Just accept it.”

She glared at him. “Syth, damn it! Tell me the truth!” She was becoming angry.

He started laughing.

She was confused. Why was he having so much fun with this? They both knew it was real. She almost started having second thoughts about the dream-like reality. It was to good to be true. Syth was to big of a jerk to ever be that romantic. Maybe it was only a dream.

But she couldn’t believe that. That’s when it hit her. ‘You will think this is a dream in the morning.’ Syth had said to her before she had fallen asleep.

He was still laughing. She glared at him again.

“Syth, I can’t believe you!” She was angry at him for messing with her mind like that. He almost caused her brain to implode.

“I told you,” he said, still half-way laughing.

“You could have caused some serious brain damage.”

“Sorry?” It was a question.

She sighed. That was just like Syth. And I love him why? She wondered.

“I wonder that myself,” he said more serious now.

“I understand why you wanted to pretend it never happened. You just needed to get it out of your system. Once it wasn’t eating at you anymore you could forget all about it. It didn’t matter what I thought.”

“Well, that and I thought it would be funny to confuse you.” He smirked.

“Syth, you are unbelievable!”

He broke into laughter. “Hey, I only tease you because I care.”

“That’s a good way to show your feelings.”

Syth got up and walked to Sovira. He reached for her hand and said, “I do love you, Sovira.”

“I love you too.”

“But this can’t go on,” he continued.

“I know,” she said glumly.

She knew in her heart it was the truth, but she longed for him. She didn’t know what to do. There was so much going on in her life that her brain couldn’t handle it. It could only process a few things at a time. Right now it’s too busy processing the whole situation with Karamys, Damien, the fight coming up, and everyone she knew dying. That was all her brain could take on now. She couldn’t distinguish whose love meant more and how to handle it. This would have to wait until all of this was over. But even then, she could never have Syth if she wanted. They lived in two different worlds. And humans didn’t belong here. The devil was strict about it. She needed to disappear before Syth’s birthday. Why had he even invited her if he knew the rules of the devil? Was he just being nice? Or maybe because it was typical of Syth - always breaking the rules.

That was one thing she liked about him. He was so carefree. She liked how he snuck her out after Ahx had already said no. But would he really break the rules at someone else’s expense? She didn’t believe that. Syth was only trying to be nice when he invited her to his birthday.

Another month and the devil will be here. Would all of this be over by then? She could only hope. She’d much rather face Karamys and Damien than the devil himself. The thought of it all being over was a good and bad thing. If she had Markus, she could return to her world. If not, then she didn’t care if she’d have to face the devil. She would stand up to him in confidence. She’d have nothing to lose.

But then her mind came to Syth, who was still standing in front of her. He hadn’t spoke the whole time she was thinking. Was he eavesdropping on her thoughts?

“Even thought I despise Markus, I will do what I can to protect him - for you. And if something happens to Markus, I will be here for you. I promise.” His words were strong.

“Really?” Her eyes became watery.

“Yes. I promise, Sovira. You have my word.”
