“Oh, I’m so worried.” She embraced him. “About everyone.”
“The fight?” he questioned as he put his arms around her.
“Yes. It’s just…the last time you two fought…” she couldn’t finish the sentence.
“I know, but…”
“But what? Is there any kind of hope that you can beat him?”
“Very little.”
“How small?”
“It doesn’t matter. It’s not dependable.”
“Well, what is it?”
“If I could use the full extent of my power and control it. Or I could just give in to it.”
“But then you might hurt more than just Damien.”
“I know. I don’t plan on giving in to my power.”
“What if there was a way to control it?”
“I’ve tried everything I can possibly think of.”
She sighed. If only there was a way.
“I wish there was,” Syth said.
“There has to be a way.”
“But there isn’t. I have the devil’s blood flowing in my veins. There is nothing I can do. Nothing, Sovira.” He rose his tone.
She had to recoil from his instant anger. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you. I was just trying to be hopeful.”
“I know. I’m apologize for snapping at you like that.”
“It’s okay. I can only imagine how it must feel to not be able to control yourself.”
The room filled with silence. Sovira wanted to know how Syth planned on beating Damien. The last time they fought, Damien seemed ten times stronger than Syth. How did he plan on winning? Did he even have a plan?
Sovira had a plan. She would figure out a way Syth could control his power. There had to be a way. She had less than a week to find one, but she had to try. She was always the useless one. Always causing trouble or misfortune. This time she would be of help. She wouldn’t let herself be a burden any longer.
A bewildering thought entered her mind. Syth was superior and almost invincible because the devil had made him his own. He had cursed him to be this way. That’s where Syth’s incredible power came from. But what made Damien so strong? So powerful? Was he cursed too? Nobody had ever mentioned where Damien’s power came from. It bemused Sovira.
“You should go,” Syth said and glanced at the door as if someone was coming.
Her expression turned to disappointment. She wasn’t quite done talking to Syth. “But-”
“Just go. I’ll come up with a plan. Damien is only my cousin. I know his powers better than he knows my own.”
That’s real convincing, she thought and shook her head. “You don’t even know your own, Syth.”
“I’ll figure something out, okay?”
“Kay, but so will I,” she smiled and turned to leave.
“And what we mentioned earlier, it’s not to be mentioned again.” It was a statement and not a question. He wasn’t asking her to, he was telling her.
She knew what he was saying. They wouldn’t express their feelings for each other from here on out. And he wasn’t asking her if she was okay with that. He was telling her, or commanding her not to. What would he do if she broke down and couldn’t help herself? Would he get angry with her? She was only human.
But he was right. This was the only thing they could do. Well, it was the right thing to do.
“Okay,” she agreed in a whisper.
“And, Sovira.”
“Yes?” She turned to face him.
“This isn’t my choice. It’s yours. You know you could have me anytime you wanted.”
“I know, Syth. I know.”
She turned back toward the door and flinched. This must have been why he wanted her to go. Markus was standing in the doorway. Oh, no, she thought. How much had he heard?
“Markus-” she started to say before she was interrupted by him.
“Don’t even bother, Sovira. I know what’s going on. You are always somewhere with Syth. I’m not the only one who notices,” Markus said. He was infuriated.
Ahx, Sovira thought.
“Most likely,” Syth answered her thought.
“What?” Markus said. “Who asked you to speak?”
“I don’t need permission,” he said as calm as he could keep his voice.
You could tell he just wanted to snap and break Markus’s neck. You could see it in his posture and his expression. He really hated Markus, Sovira thought. How was he keeping so calm about it? How was he able to control his anger so well? Was this all for me? Sovira wondered. Syth glanced at her then back to Markus. He looked like he was going to snap at any second.
“Markus, just go. We’ll talk in my room,” Sovira said.
She was worried about him. Worried that Syth wouldn’t be able to control himself much longer.
“No. I need to talk to you and Syth,” he demanded.
She groaned. This was going to get ugly. “Come on, Markus.”
She tugged his arm and tried to pull him out the door with her.
It didn’t work.
Markus yanked his arm away and stormed toward Syth. Syth got in a stance like he was going to pounce on Markus.
“Get back, Markus. I’m warning you,” he growled.
