Which Side Are You On? *Part 55*

“Syth,” Sovira said as she turned around. He looked awful.

“I thought I’d come…and tell you I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for it to happen. It just-”

“It’s okay, Syth. I know. It’s your curse. It’s not your fault.”

“You actually…understand? You’re not mad at me?”

“Of course not. You have no control over it.”

“You’re too kind.” He shook his head. “I don’t understand humans.”

“Well, I don’t understand demons. Did you hear what they’re considering out there?”

“No. I heard them arguing, but I paid them no attention. They’re always like that. None of us think on the same level.”

“I see that.”

She bit her lip and kicked her foot in discomfort. Her heart was fluttering, but was that because she was in love or because she was afraid?

“I guess I should go.” He turned toward the door.

“No, wait.”

“No, please, Sovira. I only wanted to apologize.” He left the room.

She sighed as she stared at the empty doorway. Would my life ever be the same? Things were taking turns for the worst.

“Hey Sovira. Are you alright?” Sariin asked as she walked back into the hallway.

“Yeah, I just needed a drink,” Sovira replied.

She started walking toward the stairs before Ahx stopped her.

“I’ll come with you,” he said.

“I’ll be fine. Markus is only human. And besides, he loves me.”

“We don’t know that we can trust him, and he’s not exactly in a good shape right now.”

“What do you mean? What was going through his head?”

“We just need to be cautious, okay?”

“He’s human,” she argued.

“He may be, but there’s still a possibility that he’s a demon.”

“Or a devil,” Hermione butted in.

“Or a human.” Ugh, Sovira groaned. Why won’t they listen? This is ridiculous.

“Ahx, I’ll take her,” Sariin said as she made her way beside Sovira.

“Fine, but be cautious.”

“Oh, quit being such a worry wart.”

Sovira didn’t mind Sariin coming along with her. At least she didn’t make her feel like she was being baby-sat. She felt more like a friend. At least she didn’t believe all his nonsense.

They made it to Markus’ room. The door was already open.

Oh, my god. He looks awful, Sovira thought. To thin he’s still alive. Poor Markus. This is all my fault.

She walked over to where he lay on the bed. He was still asleep it seemed. His eyes were so black. And his face and skin were as pale as the moon. It was as if the life was beaten out of him. It was hard to believe there was actually life in that body.

Was he really a demon? Sovira wondered. No way.
