Which Side Are You On? *Part 61*

“What’s bothering you?” Ahx asked Sovira.

“I’m worried about the fight.”

“Of course.”

“Please tell me you have a plan.”

“Well…”

He didn’t have a plan either, did he? If he didn’t, then she had one of her own.

“Syth is stronger than Damien, isn’t he? Shouldn’t he be able to beat him?”

He nodded. “But Syth can’t beat him unless…” he paused. It was an unbearably long pause.

“Unless?” Sovira said, to anxious to wait for him to finish.

“Unless he gives in to his power.”

“What would happen to him if he did?”

She had been over this before with Syth, but she had to ask again. She knew there was a price. There was a price for all power, as Syth had once told her.

“He wouldn’t be himself. His power is too strong. It will control him.” He paused. “The devil gave him more power than we can even imagine. We’re not even sure as to how much. It’s too risky, too dangerous, and that is why he mustn’t give in.” He was strict about it. “If he’s even thinking about it the slightest, you must persuade him not to. He will listen to you more than any of us.”

“But if there was a way he could control it?”

“He would be the most powerful demon in this world, the most powerful ever. The true son of the devil. Nearly as strong as him, maybe even equal in power. We don’t know the extent of Syth’s abilities and we’d rather not find out. Controlling it is simply impossible.”

“Amazing.”

“Not amazing, Sovira. It’s a curse. Syth doesn’t enjoy this.”

“I know. I can only imagine what it must be like not being able to control your actions, but if he could control it just imagine. He could turn this world around.”

“Possibly.” He wasn’t into her idea.

“I need to talk to Syth. Thanks, Ahx.”

“Sovira, it can’t be controlled,” he called to her as she left his room.

She had a plan. It might work and it might not. She was sure Ahx already knew about her deathly plan, and he probably wasn’t too pleased; probably thought she was out of her mind. He was definitely against it, but maybe Syth wouldn’t be.

“Syth, can we talk?” she asked him when she found him in the sitting room.

The television was on, but he wasn’t paying any attention to it.

“Sure,” he answered.

She sat next to him on the sofa. His hair was a mess and their were dark circles under his eyes. She didn’t notice them earlier.

“Have you had any sleep?”

“Some.”

“Since when? You look horrible.”

“I haven’t been able to sleep,” he admitted.

“It’s not because of me is it?”

“No, of course not. I’ve had a lot on my mind.”

“What is it that’s been bothering you so much?”

“Same thing you’re thinking about.”

“My…plan?”

“Yes,” he paused to look her dead in the eyes, “But it’s impossible.”

She almost flinched when he stared at her, but she held herself back. He looked so awful that it was scary. She did everything she could to remain calm.

“What if there was a way?”

“What if? I’m tired of all these what ifs. I’m cursed for all eternity. There’s no breaking this curse,” he rose his voice, scaring her even more.

She really was out of her mind. What if he lost it right here, right now? He seemed to be short of temper, possibly from no sleep.

“It’s only a what if if you don’t try to break it, because then you will never know.”

“And I will never be myself again if I try and fail.”

“You said you love me right?”

“Yes.”

“Then you can do this. No, we can do this - together,” she said in confidence and grabbed his hand.

“Do you really think so?”

“I know so. If I wasn’t sure I wouldn’t be asking you to do this. I don’t want to lose the only thing I have left.”

“I’ll think about it, okay?”

“Thanks, Syth.”

“But if I don’t, or can’t, or for some reason I lose to him,” he paused. “That’s what I’m most worried about.”

“You’re worried what will happen to me if you lose?”

He nodded. “I don’t know what I’d do if they hurt you.”

“Well, if you lose,” she said and lifted his head up to meet her gaze. “I’ll use this.” She grabbed her amulet. “And I’ll go to my world. I’ll go where they can’t find me. Somewhere they’d least expect me to go.”

“And where might that be?”

“I can’t tell you that.”

He chuckled.

She glared at him. “Oh, right.”

He could read her mind, so there was no keeping secrets from him.
