Situations Change
                                   Chapter Two

The school day seemed to last forever, but when the final bell rang I ran outside to my car. Bethany was already waiting there and I hightailed it home, without giving her an explanation as to why I was in such a hurry. When we walked inside the house I tried to act cool so she wouldn’t get suspicious.
“Go do your homework and then you can go to your friends house,” I told her. She sighed and headed upstairs to her room. I ran to my mother’s office. It was just the way she always kept it. Bethany and I could never stand to clean it out. I sighed in relief when her record was in the correct spot. I pulled it off of the shelf and stuck my hand inside the slip. I felt a piece of paper and pulled it out. My name was written in my mothers beautiful script on the outside of the paper. I took a deep, cleansing breath and opened it. It took a moment before I could read it, but when I finally did, it felt like I couldn’t breathe.
   <p style="font-family:Segoe Script;">Dear Leigh,
If you are reading this than it means I didn’t make it through recovery. I wanted to tell you all of this myself, but I never found the nerve. I love you and Bethany dearly. You are the most precious things I have ever had, and I hope you still love me after you read what I have to say.
You’re dad is not who you think he is. In high school, when I got pregnant with you, I was dating someone else. I didn’t meet your dad until after I was already pregnant with you, but he didn’t care. Your birth fathers name is Jason Lawrence and he lives in Eagle Lake, Maine. It’s not too far from here. I never told you the truth because he never knew about you. I’m so sorry for lying to you sweetheart and I hope you can forgive me. Tell Bethany I love her, and please, take care of each other.
                                                           I love you both,
                                                                                Mom

I could feel the panic attack coming on. I hadn’t had one in months, but this little letter was about to set me over the edge. The paper fell from my hands and I slipped down into a nearby chair. I felt the tears coming out of my eyes heavily and I felt like screaming. I had the familiar pain in my chest and I couldn’t breath. How could she lie to me? My whole life, both of my parents lied to me.
I heard the front door opening, which signaled that Caitlin was here, as she was everyday after school. She took longer to find me because I never came into the office, but when she did she rushed to my side.
“Leigh, just breathe. It’s alright. What happened?” She asked, knowing the symptoms to my panic attacks. I handed her the letter without saying anything and she read it over. “It’s okay, we’ll figure it out. Put yourself together before Beth comes in here and finds you like this.”
It took a moment to be able to breathe again, but I finally calmed down. I stood up and walked out of the office. I couldn’t stand to be in there anymore. I took a few cleansing breaths before walking over to the mirror and checking my makeup. I hardly wore any so nothing was running. I walked into the kitchen to start dinner and I heard Caitlin following me.
“So, this has to be a joke right?” She asked, meaning the letter. I grabbed the fish sticks out of the freezer and spread them out on the pan.
“No, it’s not. That’s her writing and I found it in her favorite record. My mom and dad lied to me my entire life,” I said as I put the pan in the oven and started working on macaroni. “I have to find Jason and talk to him.”
“Whoa, wait. Jason? As in Jason Lawrence, your biological father?” She asked. I nodded. She sighed and walked over to me. “You cannot go to him. He probably has kids of his own now.”
“So, what, just because he doesn’t know about me he doesn’t ever need to know? I want to know my father,” I told her. She sighed and gave up. There was no arguing with me. Before either of us could say anything else Ryan walked in. He pecked my cheek before taking a seat in his usual spot at the table.
“What’s going on?” He inquired. I smiled at him and answered his question before Caitlin could tell him the truth.
“We were just talking about your party this weekend. I’d love to go,” I told him. He beamed at me. His smile always made my insides melt.
“Alright. Everyone in school is talking about it. It should be a very eventful weekend,” he said. I smiled at him.
“Hey Cait, can you watch the food real quick. I have to go talk to Beth,” I told her. She nodded and I headed up to Bethany’s room. Her door was closed and locked; the way it always was. She hated me with a passion and I could do nothing to fix it. I knocked on her door and waited for her to open up. She opened it and said nothing. She walked back to her bed that had her schoolbooks on it. “Did you want to go to Ryan’s party this weekend?”
“Yes, but it’s not like you were going to let me. You live like a prude and I have to too, right?” She scowled. I sat down beside her.
“I’m not a prude, but I will ignore that,” I stated. She sat up and arched her eyebrow in disagreement.
“When’s the last time you got laid? Maybe if you got laid more often you’d be less of a bitch,” she said. I decided to ignore her.
“We are both going to the party and we’re going to stay up in the lodge for the weekend so pack a bag for the weekend,” I told her before walking away from her. “You know, I don’t like that you hate me, but I do love you Bethany. I love you so much that I give up everything just to take care of you. I know you think I just want to ruin your life but I just need to make sure you have a chance to grow up on your time and not because you have to,” I say before leaving her room. Before I know it she had ran after me and put her arms around me.
“Thank you for taking care of me,” she says and then leaves. I smile to myself before walking back down to the kitchen to make sure Caitlin didn’t screw anything up.
“Hey Leigh, I have to go home. Some crisis with my step dad, but don’t do anything about that thing we found out about,” she ranted on, “just wait a couple weeks and think about it.”
“Alright. I’ll see you at school,” I told her. I already had my mind made up. I didn’t care what anyone said. I needed to at least meet my father. I wanted to meet him and I’m going to.
