“No.” her voice was firm and steady.

“Excuse me?” I asked, almost humored by her unyielding tone.

“I’m afraid I didn’t find that complicated, and thus have no better way of explaining it to you.” She replied, still maintaining her unwavering demeanor. I took in a deep breath, looked down at the table before I looked back up into the gray, storm-like eyes that I knew almost too well.

“I wish you’d reconsider. I was serious when I said I wouldn’t take no for an answer.” I answered, trying not to give off how incredibly desperate I was.

“It doesn’t seem you have any other options.” She smiled.

“Ah” I grinned, looking away from her for a moment; I didn’t want to get distracted by her smile…again. “Appearances are deceiving, you should know that. I suppose we do things the hard way now. You’ll be working for me soon, don’t doubt that” I said with such certainty, I knew it had to annoy her. I looked back at her and continued to smile.

She leaned forward, propping her hand up onto her closed fist, and sliding her other hand flat onto the surface of the table. He voice was low and deliberate as she spoke, “You could not possibly know what I will and will not do, now or ever, don’t doubt that.”

I mimicked her move and leaned in as well, replying in the same tone, “I enjoy a challenge.”

“Good,” She replied, tilting her head upwards slightly, “if that’s all, I’ll be leaving now. I hope to never see you again.” But she didn’t move. Still stubborn as ever.

“I’m sorry to hear that. I recommend you tread lightly.” I said, draping my hand on top of hers, I tried to ignore the consequential feelings of my action, but I wanted her to understand that I am who I am, and that is; I’m on top of the underworld.

“I recommend you don’t threaten me” She slowly withdrew her hand out from underneath me.

“Not a threat, a recommendation.”

At the point, the waitress appeared and stood there in doubt for a moment, but neither she nor I would break our gaze.

“Do you guys need a moment?” she said, unsure. I gave her one last look before turning to the waitress.

“No. I’m ready thank you. I’ll take a coffee, and she’ll…” I stopped as soon as I realized she was already out of her chair and walking away. “Be leaving” I laughed. “Thank you”

Wakley Dare. Now it isn’t hard to guess why I never had the guts to speak to her very much in high school, for I knew how strong she was compared to everyone else. But one would think feelings would falter over time, but of course life is never that easy.

At that moment my phone began to vibrate. I picked it up, “Hello?” I said.

“How goes it?” The voice asked.

“She’ll be ours in no time, I guarantee it” I replied, and then hung up the phone.
