Shadows on the Wall *2*

“Has she moved yet?” I asked.

“Not since last time you asked.” The voice from the other side replied.

“Jacob, this is a serious mission, would you please act like it?” I said.

“What’s that, boss? I think you’re breaking up…” 

“Jacob!” I shouted.

“Relax, boss. I’m only kidding. But what I don’t get is why you need another hacker, what’s wrong with Harold?” 

I sighed slightly before I replied, “Jacob, I’ve told you. Two is better than one.  Give the phone to Sid.”

“But how come…?”

“Because I need someone serious.” I growled.

“I’m serious! I-.” he started to say.

“Hand it over!” I yelled, cutting him off. There was slight shuffling coming out of the receiver then I heard Sid.

“Yah Boss?” He said his voice raspy.

“Nothing, Jacob was giving me a migraine.” I replied.

“Wait! She moved!” I heard Jacob scream.

“Shit, quite him down, would you?” I said to Sid.

“Shut the hell up, boy!” Sid breathed, and I heard him hit Jacob.

“Ouch! What the hell?” Jacob shouted.

“What did she do?” I asked.

“Flipped you off man” Sid replied. “Well it was more of a general ‘flip off’ but I’m sure it was directed towards you.” I laughed slightly.

“How long have you been watching her now?” I asked.

“About two and a half hours.” Sid replied. “She still hasn’t budged. I even had enough time to construct some blue prints for some cool shit man.”

“Right. Well as soon as she does, get Lucy and Snake to follow her, and then have them call me.” I told him, and then hung up.  I took a deep breath and leaned back in my chair. It wasn’t fifteen minutes later that I got another call.

“Hey there, Boss!” the chipper female voice almost sang.

“Hello, Lucy.” I replied. “She’s moved?”

“Oh yea, right now we are just walking along the street. She looks like she’s in a daze or something, yah I don’t know. I’m afraid she’s going to trip over something the way she’s walking” Lucy said, speaking fast as usual.

“Be sure you don’t lose her.” I said. Knowing her, she’s probably already aware she’s being followed.

“Oh we won’t, Snake and I are real smooth like. He’s so used to being all stealth like, with the lock-picking at what not.” She laughed.

“Yah and you’re used to all things that go ‘boom’, can you keep your voice down?” I asked.

“Oh yah, sorry boss” she whispered.  “Oh! What’s that?”

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“Snake, come here and look!” Lucy yelled.

“No wait, pay attention!” I pleaded.

“wow that’s freaking cool…” I heard Snake mutter.

“I know! I don’t even know what it is! Is it a bug?” Lucy giggled.

“I don’t know!” Snake replied.

“Hey!” I shouted.

“What?” Lucy replied. “Oh crap, where did she go?”

“Are you serious?” I seethed.

“Sorry?” Lucy mumbled.

“Sorry? You’re SORRY?” I began to yell, but then my phone began to beep and I realized I was getting an incoming call from Harold. I hung up on Lucy and answered the call.

“She’s in our venue now, man” Harold said. “Whitney and I are tailing her now. By the rate she’s going, it won’t be long before she realizes we are following, she’s practically running.”

“What the hell is she doing…?”  I mumbled. “She’ll be in Raymond’s court soon, right?”

“Yah I’m pretty sure.” Harold said, running out of breathe. “Dude, I should not have to run! My job is to deal with computers, not chase half-crazy chicks.”

“Shut the hell up, Harold, and just do your job. I don’t want to hear your complaining” I replied.

“Sorry boss…” Harold replied. “Whitney, how the hell are you going so fast?! You’re flipping communications! How are you so fit?”

“Shut up and run!” I heard Whitney reply.

“Raymond will call when she’s in his sector.”Harold said, hanging up. I let out another sigh, trying to regain composure. This was all too hectic. THIS team was supposed to be the best of the best and they can’t even do a simple task anymore. I mean they get distracted by a BUG. After about ten minutes I realized Raymond had not yet called, and I wonder what had happened. Jacob had said she was running, so she had to be in Raymond’s designated area by now. I picked up my phone and dialed his number. The sun was going down, so I was afraid he had lost her.

“Hey, sorry I didn’t call” Raymond answered the phone. “It’s quite where we are, I don’t want her to pick up the drift, you know?” Raymond was probably the most secure one of the groups. He knew what I wanted to hear and made sure that it was what was going on. He was my second in command and did a fine job.

“Where are you?” I asked.

“We’re in a back street; I think she’s on her way home. Tara and I are following from a distance” He replied.

“ I see. Once she gets there, call me back. I’ll take over from there. You and Tara can knock off as well as the other teams. Okay?” I said.

“Will do” then the line went dead. I got up and began to walk in the direction of her house.  The streets were now dark and the moon was the only other light besides the few street lamps decorating the sides of the roads. It seemed I was the only one out, draped in the darkness. By the time I was about five minutes from her home, Raymond called and told me she was in and he was on his way back to base.  When I got to her house, all the lights were off and the air seemed thick. I knocked on her door a few times, but when there was no answer I did so again.

“Wakley, I know you’re in there. Just grow up and answer. I’ll give you to the count of three!”I shouted. “one!....Two!...three!” at that moment I thrust my body with full force into the door, knocking it over. I stood in the door way momentarily before I heard shuffling coming from the other room, a few banging noises sounded out. I walked in slowly as if not to be heard.

Then a scream broke the silence of the night.
