Unfortunately ... He's the father [19]

Chapter 19

Tracey and I rushed back down the main lobby so that we could get to the right hallway our next class was on. I was going a bit too fast for my liking, but I didn’t want to be late to class and we only had about three minutes.

When we got to the main lobby, we went to the right and down the small hallway that led to the garden. When we got across the garden, we went to the side door and down that short hallway.

Dr. Greene was the only teacher we hadn’t met during orientation. This was sure to be a surprise.

“Whew, made it with seconds to spare!” Tracey said as we slowed down our pace outside of the classroom.

“Yeah… and…” I tried to catch my breath. “Never… ever… make a pregnant girl run that fast again.”

 I took a sip of my strawberry banana smoothie and tried to relax.

“Sorry, Hun” She smiled and grabbed my arm. “But hey! At least we made it in time!”

We walked through the door just as most of the other students were sitting down in their seats. I didn’t see any professor in sight which was a relief. Tracey and I took two seats in the third row and waited like everyone else for our teacher to arrive.

I looked all around the room trying to figure out where he was, but it was clear he wasn’t in here. I looked at everyone’s face and I didn’t see any sign of him—not that I knew what he looked like.

“So where do you think he is?” I asked Tracey.

“Dr. Greene?” She asked. I nodded. “I don’t know… maybe he’s just running late.”

I noticed that everyone was looking around the room now, just as I had been. Everyone was probably wondering the same thing—where is this guy?

Someone in the back of the room cleared their throat and everyone turned around.

“Hello class,” I watched as a guy in a pair of nicely fit jeans and a white dress shirt stood up. He had the first two buttons of his shirt unbuttoned and his sleeves were neatly pulled up to his elbows. He looked like a model. “I’m Dr. Greene”

I heard a few “Are you serious’” and “Wow’s” and I even saw one girl lick her lips.

Dr. Greene smiled and began walking toward the front of the room. “Sorry for the wait. I just like to get a feel of the maturity level of my students before they know I’m in the room.” He smiled. “Did I fool anyone?”

I know he wasn’t expecting anyone to answer, but a girl at the front of the room looked as if she wanted to answer anyway.

“So, I hate going threw a whole class without knowing everyone’s names… luckily this class isn’t as big as it usually is so everyone will get a chance to introduce themselves.”

I watched his every move as he walked over to my side of the room. “Let’s start over here”

He called on a girl who was sitting in the front row and she stood and gave her first and last name. She said her name was Melody Reynolds and that she was eighteen years old.

He called on a guy next who said that his name was Ryan Gaines and that he was seventeen and that he would be eighteen in December.

Then he called on Tracey who said that she was eighteen and that her birthday was in July.

Then he called on me. I told him my name and that I would be eighteen in a week.

Tracey looked at me in shock and I gave her a confused look. Then it hit me, I had forgotten to tell her about my birthday.

"Sorry" I mouthed to her.

Dr. Greene looked at me and smiled when he saw me giving Tracey an apologetic look. "Well, I guess we should plan something special for Ms. Williams, everyone"

I looked at him nervously and shook my head. "No... no you really don't have to do that. It's not a big deal really."

"You're my student now, and in this class we celebrate birthdays," He walked over to the other side of the room. "Who else has a birthday coming up in August?"

Two more people, a guy and a girl, raised their hand. Dr. Greene pointed to the girl. "What's your name?" He asked.

"Amira," She stated with a bit of confidence in her voice.

"And you?" Dr. Greene asked motioning toward the guy.

"Oh, uh, Kyle..." He responded.

"So then it's settled!" Dr. Greene went over to the dry erase board and wrote in blue marker that we would have a birthday celebration for the three of us in a week.

I just sat there bewildered. This guy, my teacher, was probably the most down to earth people that I had ever met. The fact that he was my teacher made it all the more weird, but he was cool so I didn't mind.

He continued letting everyone introduce themselves, and then he told us a little about himself as well. It turns out, he had gotton his degree in medicine and it wasn't until he was done with classes that he realized he had a passion for teaching. I couldn't believe it. He was missing out on all that money just to teacher of few courses on a college campus. I would never!

Then again, It would probably be boring. That's was probably his main reason for leaving anyway. Oh well, to each his own.

I took another sip of my smoothie as Dr. Greene handed out a coarse syllabus. He said that everything on the sheet of paper he was handing out was able to be done in a matter of days, but that we would be doing most of it in class. The only thing we would probably do out of class was the computer assignments.

I felt my cellphone vibrating in my pocket and I pulled it out to see who it was. Nathan had sent me a text message.

"I think we should talk" The text said.

I looked at it in confusion before I texted back. "About what?"

It took him only one minute to reply back, and it was the longest minute of my life. But, when he did text back, I silently wished he hadn't.

"About... Kenneth"

Shit!
