Denial--chapter 001

I'm in love! Yes, I said it. I'm in love with my boyfriend Leon. Before we started going out, I had the biggest crush on him. I would write "Madison and Leon" all over my journals and I'd call him and hang up really fast just to hear his voice. I was in like with him. But six months ago when he asked me out, I thought I was going to faint... well, I did, but not in his face. He had walked me home from school and as soon as I said yes and allowed him to kiss me on the cheek, I went inside and collapsed. It was great.

After our first date we were official. I had met his parents and he had met mine. Everything was going really good and I was happy--I still am.

Leon still treats me like he did when we first started going out. For out three month anniversary he bought me a charm bracelet; it was so beautiful. I only take it off sometimes, but most of the time I keep it on.

It reminds me of how madly in love we are with each other.

Today is our six month anniversary and I'm excited to see what we're doing. Leon is so Romantic and he always does little things to make sure I'm happy and comfortable; that's probably why I fell so hard for him.

After Dialing his number, I waited as it rang. "Hello?" He asked groggily as if he'd just woken up.

"Hey baby... so, is there something you want to say to me?" I asked trying to hold back a giggle.

"Uh, good morning?"

My face fell a little but I didn't let him know my mood had been slightly dampened.

"No... 1, 2, 3-"

"Why are you counting... actually, I have to call you back. Bye."

Just like that he hung up the phone.

See what I mean? He asked why I was counting... that was very considerate of him. Yesterday he asked me why I was still wearing the three dollar charm bracelet he'd bought me.

I liked when he asked me questions. It let me know that he cared.

My two best friends don't like him at all though; they just don't understand that we were meant to be together. Even though I probably won't ever tell them this... I think they're just jealous. Friends are supposed to be there for each other! Sometimes, it seems like they don't even care.

Jessica has always been the outspoken one, but yet at the same time conservative. She never liked talking about her problems, but yet she always has a story to tell. In a way, I guess I do envy her. She has the perfect body and the seductress attitude. It’s almost sad how appealing she is.

Natalie is the bossy one. She's more like Jessica than I am. Natalie always has to have things her way, and if not her way then it's not the right way. I've watched her manipulate people into doing exactly what she wanted them to do on countless occasions and then cut them out of her life as if they meant nothing to her. Honestly, I'm not sure how we became best friends. We just sort of clicked. Like they say, opposites attract.

I'm the most loving and caring in the friendship.

In truth, no one has ever been able to choose who was the prettiest out of the three of us. In my opinion, hands down it's Jessica. What am I compared to her? I mean sure, my eyes are unique—a light shade of gray—I get them from my mother. I have a flat stomach and my breast are a decent size, I'm proud of them because I can go without a bra and they'd still be perky—Leon always said he loved that about me. My natural Jet black hair is always kept up because my older sister is a hair dresser at one of the top three salons in the city and I have a naturally pretty smile. But, even still, Jessica is prettier in my book.

My phone began to ring—Pow, by Soulja boy—and I knew it was Natalie.

"Hey girly!" I said answering the phone.

"Hey chica, what's up?"

"Nothing really... you?"

"I was just calling to give you the buzz on the new kid in town," She said. I could tell she was smiling.

"Oh yeah?" I asked, curious.

"Uhuh, He's hot. You and Jess are going to flip." She giggled and I heard the sound of a car horn in the background. "Alright, calm down you old hag!" She yelled. "But anyways, let's go out tonight."

"I can't... It's me and Leon's anniversary."

There was silence on the other end of the phone.

"Hello?"

"Uh, yeah sorry... Listen Maddi, maybe you shouldn't get yourself all worked up over Leon... you're too nice for him."

"Too nice?" I asked in a confused tone. "what's that supposed to mean?"

"Sweetie, don't take offense. I'm just saying that maybe he's not your type. He's the head of the football team, a track star, and let's not forget he's one of the most popular guys in school... and you're... just nice."

I was bothered by what she said, but not nearly as bothered by how she said it. It sounded like she was taking pity on me or something. I hated when she did that.

"Nat, I have to go. I'll call you later okay?"

"Sure."

I disconnected the call and went to look in the mirror.

"You're not too nice... don't let Natalie get to you like she always does... you're NOT too nice!"

I grabbed my purse and my car keys off my dresser and headed downstairs. "Teresa, I'm leaving!" I called throughout my house to my step mom.

"Okay!"

I stepped into the Miami heat and headed to my new 2009 convertible—Another guilt gift from my neglecting father. If it's one man I can ever count on to break my heart, it's my father.

That's why I'm glad I have Leon... the love of my life.
