Foreword

It literally scared me.  It was the first time she had ever yelled at me.  I knew something was wrong.  It took a lot to tick off Elise.  She wasn’t the “yelling” type parent.  Elise is my mom, technically speaking, my step-mom.  We are both very close.  Hardly ever do we get in arguments.  She’s like my best friend.  Now I know that sounds weird, odd in a way….I mean don’t worry about me…I get that reaction a lot.  Her and my dad got a divorce when I was 9.  I’ve been living with her for 4 full years as of today.  Sometimes I wish I had my dad back, most times though, I’m content with it just being Elise and I.  She is the most compassionate person ever.  She can be shy, but if she’s with friends, or people she knows, she is very outgoing.

She’s a lawyer so you’d think she’s up tight…one reason why I hate stereo-types.  She’s really not at all the lawyer type, but she does more than exceed at her job.  She’s 23, and her birthday is August 14th.  She’s about average height for her age, 5’8”, with shoulder length brown hair.  Every two months she gets blonde highlights.  She says it’s to cover her gray hair, and then when I point out the fact that she’s 23, we both fall to the floor laughing.  Then there are times when I hear her cry at night.  Here is a fact about me: 1.) I cannot stand to see people cry. If they do, then I start crying. 2.) Even when people cry in the movies…I CRY!  Pathetic right?  I sing myself a song when I hear Elise crying…as if I’m singing it to Elise, like a lullaby, then the house returns to its customary silence.

Sometimes I wonder if my own mom would have ever compared to Elise.  I don’t know a lot about my mom.  My father and I never really brought up the subject about her…mainly because, I just never asked.  So I decided to ask Elise, and that’s when she yelled.  She told me that my mom abandoned me, just like dad did her.  She told me that my mom could never love her as much as she did.  So here I am now…Nalaney Robinson grounded for the rest of my life.  Okay so maybe I’m being a tad bit dramatic, but hey I’ve never been grounded in my life, so it feels like forever.  Elise told me that if I behave, she’ll let me off restriction early.  “Great” I told her, “Now I feel like a prisoner who gets off for good behavior.”  The best thing coming out of the divorce on behalf of Elise is that now she’s taking her time finding a man.  I mean, she was barely 20 when she married my dad.  Not including the fact they only dated for 4 months before he proposed.  All around the house are pictures of Elise and I together.  She’s not at all the workaholic.  She always hangs out with me.  Everyday after school, go with her to her office.  She’s a partner at her uncle’s firm.  Sometimes Uncle Tate asks me what I think he should do about a case.  I get my own office, only because it hasn’t been in use for the past 2 years, it’s next to Elise’s.  I have my own laptop too.  “Hey kiddo how’s the work flow?”  She asks me everyday, it’s a routine…and then we go out to dinner at “Cello’s.”  It was our family ritual.
