Roger Hartfield is just your average guy who has an average job. Roger is one of the caretakers at the Planetarium, and he absolutely loves it there. The mysteries of the galaxy have always intrigued him, so he decided to work in a place where he could share his love and knowledge, while in turn learning more every day.

The days could be very daunting. Having to make sure that each and every exhibit was carefully in place. Or go around following the kids who came on field trips, making sure that they didn’t wreck anything. But he loved it nonetheless.

Roger’s favorite part of the job is when he would close up at night. He loved being alone in the building, especially on the nights when the sky was clear. The ceiling of the Planetarium was made out of glass, that way you could see what was happening in the sky. But most of all, he loved to look at the stars through the giant telescope that was set up in the main lobby when you walked in.

As much as he loved going to work each day, he dreaded going home. Alas, even though his life was going great, one of the most important things was missing from his life: someone to share his happiness with. Sure, when he went home, he had his loveable golden retriever Sammy there waiting for him. But man’s best friend isn’t able to measure up to the love of a woman.

“One of these days Sammy,” Roger would say as he sat on his recliner while he gave his best friend a pat on the head, “one of these days, I’m going to find someone. One day I’ll find the girl that is meant for me. She’ll be glowing, absolutely radiant. Just like the stars up above.” He would then sigh, and head off to bed, Sammy sleeping on the floor close by.

It happened one night while Roger was doing his routine as he closed up. All of the doors were locked, except for the one that he leaves through. Everything was exactly as how they were supposed to be. Except for when he went to the main lobby to look through the telescope, he jumped at the sight before him.

There, lying on the floor was a woman staring through the ceiling. But, what surprised him was that her clothes were actually glowing. As he scooted closer to her, his jaw dropped, for she was absolutely beautiful, or in his words, radiant. Looking at her, he was flustered by the mere sight of her, but he recovered quickly.

“Ahem,” he coughed, trying to get her attention. His breath hitched in his throat as she smiled up at him. “Uh, you do know that the Planetarium is closed for the day?” he said as best as he could without being nervous.

“Yes, I do,” she stated simply as she turned her attention back to the ceiling.

“Well, uh, that means you’re not supposed to be in here. How are you in here anyways? I checked the whole building to make sure no one was here before I locked the doors.”

Her rich laughter echoed throughout the empty planetarium. “I just hid really well. It’s really easy to find places to hide in this place. I would always move before you got too close.”

“I guess that makes sense,” he gave a quick chuckle as he sat down on the floor beside her, his feet stretched out before him. “So, do you mind telling me why you’re here? And why you have glow-in –the dark clothes?”

“Well, at my house, there are too many trees in my yard so I can never get a decent view of the whole sky,” she said sadly. “But as for my glow in the dark clothes, I don’t really know. I guess they’re just what I put on this morning.”

“So, I guess you like to look at the stars then?” he asked her while glancing over her.

“Do I!” she said enthusiastically as the stars shone in her eyes. “I wish that I could be up there with the stars. They’re like diamonds, you know? Except that they can’t be mined,” she laughed softly to herself.

“I feel the same way,” Roger said as he too looked up at the sky, “except that I would want to also see the planets. This whole universe is such a mystery, I want to see all of its wonder. I never did catch your name by the way.”

“I’m Lucy. Lucy Sky,” she smiled warmly as she extended her hand.

“What a very interesting name you have there Lucy,” he replied as he extended his hand to shake hers.

“How is my name interesting? It’s such a dull name?” she asked curiously.

“It reminds me of a song,” he said as he looked at her. “You know, the song… Lucy in the sky with the diamonds… or something like that. I swear it’s a song,” he laughed as he raised one hand and put the other over his heart.

“Wait, I think I’ve heard that song before!” she exclaimed as she hopped in her seat.

The rest of the night continued on like this. Roger couldn’t believe that night, hoping that he wasn’t dreaming. Lucy was the girl of his dreams, and he didn’t want to lose her.

“So, uh,” he started nervously, afraid to speak. “If you want to come back tomorrow night, I could give you a personal tour, and even let you see things that normal visitors here don’t get to see.”

“Would you really do that, just for me?” she asked in surprise, her eyes widening.

“That I would,” he smiled, entranced in her.

After Roger had locked up for the evening, he walked home, like usual. But this time his steps were light, as if he were dancing. When he finally arrived at his house, he immediately enveloped Sammy in a hug. “I think that day has come Sammy. I think that today I found the girl for me. And she is absolutely radiant.”

The next day, Lucy indeed came back to the planetarium at night. Roger showed her one exhibit, but then sadly had to close up. But Lucy came back each night to have Roger’s company, eager to learn more.

Soon, the two were going on actual dates.  It was the first time in a while that Roger had been anywhere besides his house or the grocery store. Every day, Roger was falling more and more in love with Lucy.

One year later after they had first met, Roger and Lucy were once again in the planetarium, strolling around looking at the exhibits. “Did you know that it was one year ago today that we first met?” he asked as they entered the main lobby.

“Yes, I do. I’m so happy that you remember it too,” she said letting out a happy sigh.

“Tonight is special, so I’m going to let you look through the microscope,” he said excitedly while leading her over to it.

“I get to look through the telescope?” she asked disbelievingly.

“Sure do. Now, have a look see,” he urged, while he dug around for something.

“The planets are so much closer! And look at the stars! This is just so wonderful!” she exclaimed as she continued examining the universe.

“Here, turn the telescope to this degree,” he said holding out a paper that had a number written on it.

“Okay,” she said as she moved the telescope to where Roger told her. “I don’t get it, it’s just a star,” she said as she looked away.

“It’s not just a star,” he said as he handed her an envelope.

“What’s this?” she said aloud as she took the paper out of the envelope. Her eyes quickly perused what was written on the paper, and her eyes widened in shock. She let out a squeal of happiness as she tackled Roger to the floor. The paper was a documentation that Roger bought a star and named it after Lucy.

“I guess that you like it then,” he laughed as she rolled off of him.

“I love it so much,” she said while standing up. “It’s the best present ever!”

“So now you’ll be a diamond in the sky, just like the song,” he teased as he brought her in for a hug.

“I don’t know how this night can get any better,” she said while looking at the paper once again, her smile never leaving her face.

“I can think of a way that it can. Follow me,” he said as he lead her to a nearby bench.

Roger paused to take a nervous breath. “Lucy, it was one year ago tonight that we first met. That was the night my life changed for the better. I am no longer the lonely man I once was, now that I have you. The day that I first saw you, I knew that there was something special about you. From the way you loved outer space just as much as me, to the glow in the dark clothes that you were wearing. I am falling deeper and deeper in love with you every day. Lucy Mae Sky, will you marry me?”

Tears brimmed Lucy’s eyes as he shakily took a box from his pocket. Inside was a diamond ring which was shaped like a star. “Yes. Yes Roger Hartfield, I will marry you!” she cried happily as she gave him a hug.

Once upon a time, Roger wished on a star. And the little tinkling star up so high, which looked like a diamond in the sky granted him his wish. He would be with his true love forever, his love which shone like those diamonds in the sky. A light that will never burn out until the end of time.

Yeah... so it was cheesy. I'm on this site called storywrite.com, and they have contests, and i was given the prompt "Diamond in the Sky" and this is what I came up with. I hope that you liked it! It felt so weird not posting anything for a while, so I just had to post this and share it with you :D

I am still working on I Wish it Would Rain, which will hopefully be out sometime next week! I want to get to chapter7 or 8 before i start posting, and right now I'm stuck on chapter 3. So, please bear with me a little bit longer while i write. For those of you who are impatient, I already have the Intro and chapter 1 posted on Mibba.

I wish all of you who are doing NaNoWriMo good luck! May you reach your goals. I know that I probably won't do it :(
