Chapter 2

My chest rose and fell for seconds at a time. I saw only a bright blinding light. I felt warmth on my lips and chest. My legs, arms, and parts of my chest felt cold and numb. I could hear faint whispers in the distance thought I knew they weren't whispering. I NEED YOU TO GET ME A TRANSFUSION STAT!  A transfusion?  A blood transfusion? What did they need that for? I was fine. I was breathing and talking. Or at least I was before everything went bright.

My body felt cold numb and useless. I felt air hit me in every direction. I was slightly rocking from side to side. More whispers came from above me. Were losing her!  Get her in the emergency room now!  Chase? Chase was that you? What's going on? Why do I need a transfusion?  You're not loosing me. I'm right here!  WHY AREN'T YOU LISTENING?!  I HEAR A PULSE, STAND CLEAR! Just then a felt a shock spread its way throughout my body. Once, twice, three times. My heart jumped with excitement as if playing with the painful shock. I did not want to welcome it, but my heart absorbed the pain and began to beat loudly as it jumped up and down. THAT'S IT WE GOT HER KEEP IT COMING!

Rushing, and racing, and running in circles. My breathing was short and my heart was beating, louder and louder as time passed. I could feel my legs aching as my feet pounded against the hard pavement. I couldn't stop. It was as if time had stopped. I was moving so fast I couldn't recall my purpose. Why was I running? I looked toward my feet to see a sidewalk that seemed to continue forever and to infinity. It was wet and I could see a reflection. But it wasn't my reflection I saw, it looked as if a blur of traffic going in the opposite direction of that that I was headed. A single stream of sweat fell from my brow and glided down my cheek to my neck. A chill ran down my back through my spin as I reached for the damp spot. I swiped my hand where the drop had trickled, removing the moist drop. Lifting my hand for a clear view, my heart fell, and I stopped running. The trickle wasn't sweat. It was blood, rich and thick.

I immediately grabbed my neck and examined it thoroughly. No cuts or wounds of any kind. The area that surrounded me grew all to quiet. My breath shortened and, my vision blurred. I could feel myself embrace the ground as I fell to my knees. The water had disappeared; all that remained on the floor now was a puddle of blood. Oddly clear enough to see a reflection. In the reflection was, myself and a blurry figure in the distance behind me. My pupils shrank and my breath seized all together as the figure moved toward me, his hand held high. In his raised right hand was a dagger, covered in blood. Drip, drip. I opened my mouth to scream, but nothing. It was as if a sixteen wheeler was rolling over my lungs making it impossible for me to breathe or say anything of any kind. Tears streamed down my face as I reached for my throat grasping for air. The figure got close enough to reveal that he was wearing a mask, but not just any mask; it was carved into the face of the devil. Grasping for air, I began to push away grabbing the sidewalk behind me pulling me away, while pushing with my feet.

All attempts to escape were futile. The figure came closer faster, and with an evil look in his eye. I turned around to attempt to crawl away, only to be kicked in my right side. I lay at the feet of the masked man, holding my side while blood trickled from my mouth on to the concrete.
He told me to get up. Not wanting to get kicked again I did as I was told. I quickly went from my knees to standing, a little woozy might I add. Standing face to face I could see the fire in his eyes and he turned around, leaving me out of his sight. I took my chance. I raced to the end of the sidewalk, which didn't exist. I was a couple feet away from the man when I heard an evil laugh that got louder as I moved forward. I could feel someone's breath in my ear on the left side. I swatted my ear and began to run faster down the never-ending sidewalk. I felt like I had been running for hours when in reality I had only run for 15 minutes.

Finally I had hope. Not too far from where I was I could see a light. Yes, there was a light at the end of the sidewalk. A small smile ran across my face and tears of joy fell from my eyes like fountains. I picked up my pace. Only to be stopped by a sharp pain in my back. I fell to my knees; while I coughed blood splattered out onto the sidewalk once more. The evil laughter grew and it burned my ears. I tried to cover them, but it was no use. I couldn't escape the taunting and the laughing. It was painful to hear, it stung all throughout my body. I shut my eyes and screamed. My hands still placed over my ears for protection. I straightened my torso so that it was completely vertical. My screams became louder and the laughter stopped. I removed my hands from my ears and opened my eyes, only to see the masked man standing directly in front of me. I was completely parallel to him in every way. He lifted me up by my shoulders so that I was eye level with him. Smiling he let go of my shoulders, only to stab me in the heart. I was so stunned I couldn't speak. I just stood there, mouth wide open as my eyes flooded with tears. None of them fell. The man dug his dagger further into my heart as little shrieks of pain came from my mouth. He twisted the dagger to the left and then to the right, deeper and deeper each time. Blood ran down my torso, and gushed from the wound.

I felt as if the life in me was draining. My body fell into the hands of the man, dangling from the dagger covered in my blood. He withdrew the dagger and whipped in on my pants, smiling as he looked down at my body, admiring his work. I was no longer alive. I wasn't breathing, or smiling. I just lie there in his arms as he smiled down at me.
Then a heard a noise in the distance calling my name.

"Any change?" asked a male voice.

"No, just the same thing over and over. She won't stop screaming and she won't wake up. I keep trying to tell her it's ok but she won't wake up." It went silent for a moment. The women's voice became quieter, "It's been three days."

"She's fine though. The bleeding stopped and her heart rate is normal. The screaming, that is the only thing I can't explain. Probably side affects to the medication, a dream?" The male voice stopped and I tried to open my eyes. But they wouldn't budge. Any effort I had left as soon as I tried. The burning in my arms became more real now. Every inch of my arm was burning; I wanted to rip them off. Apparently they were so uncomfortable I had moved.

"She moved. Did you see that?" The women's voice was more understandable and I felt as if I could remember it. I knew the voice! It was Kayla! Oh Kayla I'm here. I'm awake. I felt something semi- cold hit my cheek, water? Was she crying? Oh, Kayla don't cry I'm here! I'm fine!

"I'm here! I'm fine!" was that aloud?

"Oh my gosh, April!" Kayla swung her arms around me and I could feel the pressure on my arms. I began to squirm and my eyes began to water. "Oh sorry, I'm just so happy you're alive and awake."

"Don't squish her. She just had surgery three days ago. No drug in the world could help her if you squished her." I turned to the helpful voice on my right. Chase!  "Hey April like the month, how you feeling?" He smiled my favorite smile that showed his knee weakening dimples.

"Better? How should I feel?" He didn't answer. He just looked toward his feet and sighed. "Is there something wrong with me?"

"Oh! No! There is nothing wrong. Nothing at all!" I looked into her eyes and could tell she was fibbing. She knew I knew. "OK, you do have permanent damage to your vein in your right arm, and the scars you created that were deep might heal weird. Nut other than that you're perfectly fine. They gave you a couple transfusions because you really lost a lot of blood. It was really gross how white you got, your eyes rolled back into your head. It was really scary..."

"Kayla stop that! You're going to make her have a heart attack. And if you do you the one who is going to stay by her side every night, not me." Chase looked away, I'm guessing he was a little embarrassed about the information he had just revealed. "I'll be right back I have to see when your allowed to eat, excuse me." I was to distracted by Chase's smile and Kayla's tears I totally forgot about my stomach. Chase left the room and I quickly turned my attention to Kayla who had her eyes set to meat mine as I turned.

I cleared my throat, "He was here... every night... he watched me?" I started to imagine what he heard when I dreamed, what he was thinking.

"Well yea I had to work so he covered for me and stayed by your side. So you see I really was here to, I just wasn't here the whole time. But he was, he never went home." Kayla looked guilty but confused. "You ok?"

"Yea I'm fine." I gazed off into the right corner of the room. "So he was here when I slept?" Horror fell over my face and Kayla knew it.

"April what's wrong? You look like a ghost." She paused for a brief moment. "Yes, to answer your question, he was here while you slept. Why do you ask?"

"I heard you talking about me screaming. Did I ever do anything else besides screaming?" I turned my gaze back to her big brown eyes, my eyes full of hope that I might have dodged the embarrassing usual sleep talking.

"Well you talked a couple of times. Sometimes I didn't understand what you were saying at all, but I heard my name, and chase's you even talked about pineapples a couple times." Her face surveyed mine.

"Pineapples? I said your name and chase's? Why would I? I barely know chase, and I didn't dream about either of you..." I trailed off not know anything I said would make any sense.

"Dream, you were dreaming? Is that why you were screaming? Oh I hope you weren't dreaming about me if you were screaming." I completely ignored her and turns my attention to the door.

Everything went quiet. There were faint footsteps just outside the door to my recovery room. The light would flicker under the door as if someone was passing by. The lights above me made an unnoticeable ticking noise. I'm guessing I could only hear it because of all the medication I was supposedly on. I glared at the door hoping for someone to save me from this strange night mare.

Well be careful what you wish for. I swear my heart began to beat faster when he opened that door. This had to of been a nightmare, there was no was around the idea.  My face went blank, and felt like my forehead broke out in a light sweat. No doubt a reaction to the single glance I stole of Chase when he walked into the room. His eyes met mine and my heart fell into the very pit of my stomach. What was happening? I've only known him for like what not even an hour of consciousness? This was nuts. Why does my heart beat faster when I just think of him? Why do I lose my focus and start to sweat, this just isn't like me, not at all.

Chase swiftly glided in looking down at the fake tilled floor below him, never once looking at Kayla or me.
