Strike A Match: The Demise Of The American Dream

If you like what you read, tell someone about it. I like to hear feedback and like for people to read my stuff, but absolutely hate having to market it.

In these tumultuous days of greed and fear that have slowly provided the kryptonite that has fueled the demise of the American Dream, one might find himself feeling lost. Maybe even a little scared, and rightfully so. Are we approaching the final days? If so, will we succumb without a fight? Did we revolt against the civilization from which we came, only to pour gasoline upon ourselves, waiting for someone to strike a match?

If at all possible, remove your  star spangled glasses and open your eyes, really open them, and see if your opinions don't change. What is this freedom which we supposedly have fought and died for?

Is it the freedom of religion? No, we are, after all, One Nation Under God. Sure, we can choose to believe otherwise, but it's not without significant judgement. The Church wields considerable power, and is a staple of the so called model citizen to attend at least every Sunday. For example, a man who is active in the church, and abides by, in whatever twisted way he so chooses, the bible and the word of God, he is a sure pick in almost anything in respectable society over an openly atheistic man, no matter his demeanor or qualifications. I could go on for days with this, but let's get back to the subject.

Does this freedom live in the freedom of speech? Hardly. I may be able to get by with these words as an, as of now, unpublished freelance writer, but should I gain any significant power with my opinions, that, my friend, is where the line is drawn. One may say the freedom to do so remains, but the cost could be as high as my life. Let's not forget the systematic assasinations of key figures throughout history; Martin Luther King, and the questionable death of Hunter S. Thompson, to name a few. You're free to speak, yes, as long as you are saying what you're supposed to. What a load of shit, yet, we eat that shit up, don't we?

I would like to continue, and in time I will, but for now I must attend to what some may call more important matters, such as going to work to give my hard earned money over taxes. Taxes that will soon, of all fucking things, be used to support a war that I don't agree with, yet am fucked into funding and basically endorsing. I, for one, will fight by simply opening my eyes and attempting to get someone else to do the same. The way I see it, that's all it really takes to win this battle. A peaceful revolution. But believe this, America, your days of blissful ignorance are numbered, and the clock's ticking. There is no neutral ground, so tell me, which side are you on? Unless something drastically changes, we're all booking a first class flight to Hell, and if I don't see some goddamn motivation, then fuck it, I've got some matches, it might as well be me, folks.

AngelOfNight47 I would definately have to agree with you there. The society we live in is so judgemental and controlling it's hard to break the mold and be you, and if you do you end up being looked down upon by people. Sure some people can over-look the remarks people say about them, but some of us can't.

gonzo4201 Haha, I loved this...You really raise some good points with this, though Iam having trouble figuring out what was so questionable about HunterS Thompson's death...

EvilRaven9892 Interesting on how you express your thoughts on this. It's interesting, I admit that, and well written, it's just why did you choose this topic?

Foreverlyn Very interesting points. I agree with what you are saying..too much confusion with blatant changes that simply don't come without a high price. I don't like to give my opinion on the war but undoubtely it's a subject of conversation...Excellent communicative essay.

jirrith2007 I agree with everything you say 100%. We're supposed to be this great country, where everyone is free, and can live in peace & harmony and blah blah bullshit.

How are we free when the choices we make are under scrutiny? What college we go to, what church we attend(if you do), who you marry, what your job is. Our lives are basically controlled by the government. If we were actually "free", then there would be no bans on gay marriage, women would have the right to have an abortion without protesters, just the right to basically be free.

But that's not how the world is. I agree with you, we need motivation to change. Our generation is the next to take control of this world. We need to make it so that our children, and grandchildren actually have a chance at survival. America is going down the drain, and we are the ones who need to step up to be able to save it. Today's politicians don't really give a damn about us. They're bought by all of today's fortune 500 companies so that they can continue to make money out of the ass while we are left with nothing. This needs to change!

Sorry bout my little rant here, lol.
