Mermaid *1
All my life it’s been:
“Don’t go near the water Lev!”
“Stay away from the ocean Lev!”
“No Levy! We’re not going to the beach!”
Ever since I could remember I have been forbidden to even come within 10 feet of water. As a child I was okay with this, having heard many stories of the terrors that roamed the depths of those liquid bodies. Many a night, my father would tell me tales of sharks able to swallow me whole and electric eels able to kill me with a single sting. And so, to avoid a horrible death by one of these creatures, I dutifully kept away from any mass of water that wasn’t the blow up or public pool.
But as the years went on and girls started becoming desires instead of terrors, so did the sea. Along with the longing for kisses and soft caresses came a longing to feel the cool clear waters rush over my feet, the sand seeping through my toes. I wanted to feel the rise and fall of the current beneath me, the tickling of seaweed beneath my feet with a gentle roar of the ocean waves filing my ears. I yearned to experience the calming and refreshing sensation of being surrounded by water that smelt like salt rather than chlorine. I desired to discover the mysteries of the sea.
So, the other day, when my best friend Andrew invited me and some other friends to a beach party he’d heard about, I jumped at the chance. Finally I’d get to gaze upon the vast rippling blue of the sea. I’d get to close my eyes and let the hum of the ocean wash over me. I’d get to taste the air. At last I’d know what it was like to stand waist high in the waters being fought over by the soft push and pull of the waves. My dream come true.
There was only one little problem, my parents.
I humorously had envisioned myself asking them:
“Mom, dad, can I go to a beach party with Andrew?”
“Absolutely not!” They’d reply. “You know how dangerous the ocean is!”
My mom would have one hand on her hip and the other scolding me with an outstretched finger. My dad would be standing slightly behind her with his eyebrows pinched together in a frown, staring at me incredulously.
“Actually I don’t.” I’d retort matter-of-factly. “All I know is what you’ve told me, which is the complete opposite of what I’ve heard.”
And they’d come back with, “That’s only because they don’t understand the real dangers those waters hold.”
“Dangers that are so rare they barely exist.” I’d growl.
“Watch your tongue mister!” My father would order. “I will not have you speaking to us like that! You have no idea how truly terrible the sea is, words can not describe.”
“Really, Lev, there is nothing good about the sea.” My mother would add.
And I’d scoff, informing, “I’m 16! I’m not a little kid anymore; I can take care of myself.”
“Age doesn’t matter.” They’d scowl.
“This is stupid!” I’d shout, stomping my foot and storming off into my room to pout.
Okay, so I would be a bit more mature than that but that’s what I’d feel like doing. Just to be honest. It was totally unfair for them to deny me such a wonder as the sea, I felt caged and controlled and fed up.
So I decided not even to tell them. Instead they’d be led to believe I was just spending the night at Andrew’s house, safe and hours away from any large body of water. They probably figure we’re going to stay up late playing video games and that I wouldn’t waste a thought on the ocean. Well, good for them.
Despite what they believe, though, here I am on the way to the beach, cramped in the backseat of Kyle’s minivan next the massive bulk of Brian and the bulging mass of Parker. Behind us sit the rowdy group of Conner, Logan and Cole. They are laughing quite extraneously and I’m pretty sure they’ve had a douse of alcohol. Not a surprise though; they are quite known for their excessive drinking habits. Parker and Brian are less raucous, but are still talking extensively, waving their hands back and forth in front of my face as they chat to Kyle and Andrew in the front. They have to raise their voices to be heard over the pumping rap music blaring though out the van. Not my choice in genre but I’m not paying much attention to it.
Instead I’m leaning casually against the window of the van, my mind reeling on the fact that I’m actually finally going to get to see the ocean. The best part being that I’ll get to see the sunset against the sea since it’s only about seven and we’re definitely staying after dark. I can barely stand the wait.
A jab in my shoulder brings me back into the car, Brian smiling stupidly in my face.
“Dude, you okay man?” He asks. "You've got some idiotic dreamland look on." Then he paints on a foolish half grin, tilts his head to the side, and stares blankly at the ceiling above me.
I laugh and he shakes off the imitation and joins in my amusement.
Normally I’d be just as active as they all are; the thrill of a party surging through me alongside them. But tonight I am more concentrated on getting to see the ocean and am not as into it as usual. I’m not about to tell him that though, he’d probably think I’m a sissy. Plus, none of them know I’ve never been to the ocean. The few other times there’d been beach parties I had respectively came up with some excuse not to go. But not this time, this time I decided to be free. And it feels great.
“Yeah.” I reply, letting a smile fill my face.
Accepting that answer, he turns back to re-enter the conversation with Parker and Andrew. I tune in for a while, just enough time to determine that they’re talking about something humorous that happened at some other party. I’ve heard the story before, so I go back to thinking about the ocean.
I let my thoughts consume me the remainder of the ride, and pretty soon I’m being tugged by my best friend Andrew. He’s standing at the door with a slightly annoyed look on his face. I take a look around and note that everyone’s already out of the car. I feel stupid. I was too wrapped up on the ocean to actually pay attention to when we arrived.
Wait, we arrived! I’m going to see the ocean!
“Come on man!” He urges, and I waste no time pulling myself out of the car.
I look around and note that we’re in a parking lot. I look forward, and there, right in front of me is the sea. The sun is pretty low in the sky and is reflecting off the glistening blue waters of the sea. I watch the waters foam up over the juts of rocks on one side with fascination. I’m gaping, amazed.
“Come on!” Andrew urges again, standing where the parking lot meets the grass that leads directly to the beach. I step forward, trying to look casual, but it’s just too beautiful to contain my excitement and I take off running toward the beach. I take off my shoes so I can feel the sand between my toes as soon as I get there. I fall in love with the feeling as soon as my feet touch the beach.
“Dude, what are you doing?” Andrew asks holding up my shoes in his hands. I see he’s standing in the direction of a cluster of people. Teens are clustered around a gigantic bonfire set up on the beach. I can hear the music blaring from where I stood several yards away. Some of the kids are dancing, some standing around and others had gone off in couples to have a little privacy. Just like any other party, I muse.
“I’m just feeling the sand between my feet.” I reply, stepping forward to retrieve my shoes. I tie the laces together and fling them over my shoulder as I take a quick glance behind me, down the length of beach that seems rather peaceful. Water is lapping up onto the sand in a steady rhythm, darkening the sand in its wake. The beach is outlined by a row of trees, fully green and ready for summer. I can see a house from between the trees and think for a moment of how cool it would be to live there. I feel a pull in my chest to just walk along the edge of the sea and forget to world for a time, but Andrew is waiting for me and so I reluctantly turn back around and walk with him up to the party.
“What’s up with you, dude?” He punches my arm jokingly, but yet serious at the same time, “You seem detached.”
“I’m great.” I claim, punching him back a bit harder than he did to me.
“Hey!” He shouts and I laugh.
Then I take off running toward the party, sand rubbing against my feet before being flung backwards. My shoes are banging against my back as if pounding to the rock music that is getting louder as I get closer. After a few yards I turn back to Andrew. He is still quite a few paces behind me and I shout, “Let’s party man!”
He strides quickly to my side and we join the mass of bodies conjugated around the bonfire that added heat to the sun. We find Kyle, Brian, and Parker standing in one corner bouncing a bit to the music and place ourselves next to them.
Right after us, Cole, Conner and Logan come slugging toward us carrying several plastic cups of what looks like beer. They’re having a hard time walking straight and I wonder how the heck they got so wasted in the little amount of time we’d been here.
“Here you go man.” Logan slurs, handing a cup to Brian and another to Andrew. Cole follows him and gives the two he has to Parker and Kyle.
“I got to stay sober dude.” Kyle claims holding the cup out for him to take back. “I’m driving.”
“Who cares? Live a little!” Cole exclaims, shoving the cup back to Kyle who sighs and just dumps the stuff out. Cole doesn’t complain; he’s looking off somewhere oblivious.
Logan walks to me and gives me cup. I don’t say anything, knowing it wouldn’t matter, but I don’t drink it. I don’t want to forget this night; I don’t want to forget the ocean.
Remembering again my reason for coming, I look through the mass of people and out over the beach again.
That’s when I see her, and suddenly the whole party seems to fade away leaving only me and her.
Also, I will be going on vacation until the end of July this Friday. I will write as much as I can during that time but it might be a few days between chapters just so you know. I apologize and hope you’ll continue reading J Thanks for all your support!
P.S. I like the next chapter :P
