-Chapter Three-
“I was wondering when you would come in.” Isis’s pallid body flounced into the room and she gave a withering my glare at my comment.
“Well, I was beginning to get a little claustrophobic… that’s all.”
I patted Zeus’s head while it rested across my lap and smiled crookedly at Isis. “Claustrophobic, eh? Never would’ve thought that, actually I thought you would’ve come up with a better excuse to hide the fact that you missed me.”
“Missed you?” My teasing only made her anger appear and face turn bright red. “Hell, I want to bash your head in! That is how much I want to get out of here.”
“So why didn’t you just steal my keys and drive away?”
“Because…” She pondered for a moment, obviously she hadn’t thought of that. “You probably would’ve noticed if I stole your keys.”
“Stubborn girl, you lasted at least six hours in that car. I wouldn’t have even lasted one.”
“Because you’re weak,” her face was mocking and tone snippy.
“Whatever you say love,” I said fluffing my pillow and shifting into a more comfortable position. “I don’t know about you but I would rather sleep. There is a lot of work to be done tomorrow and I need a good rest if I am to order those men around.”
She chuckled but I knew her sourness would reappear. “I am going to take a shower.” I heard her mutter but I didn’t bother to mention it was past midnight.
The shower didn’t bother my slumber much at all. I could barely hear it, but I did hear Isis call for me. It wasn’t a call that was to provoke my sensuality but one that made me jump. It was a frantic call as if something was wrong.
I ran into the bathroom to find a towel robe over her wet body while her hands were roaming all over the shower handle.
“What is—?”
“It won’t turn off!” I placed my hands near hers and pushed down the knob until the shower finally turned off. She stared at it incredulously and tightened her lips. “But…”
“Night Isis.” I mumbled making my way back over to the bedroom.
“But I tried that!? It wouldn’t…” Her enraged squeal was the last thing I heard before drifting off into a sleep.
There was a little girl standing atop the stairwell, a big smile set on her face. She was saying something but it sounded like gibberish since I was so far away from her. I could hear her meek laugh echoing throughout the halls but it was too soon to hear a piece of wood beginning to crack.
I was so far away to reach her in time but a shriek to escape both of our mouths as the entire wood snapped and she fell back completely. The thud was too loud; too blood curdling and I could even feel tears streaming down my face.
Just as I pulled myself near the railing it vanished.
I woke up in a jump to find Isis sleeping soundlessly beside me. It had been a dream, a dream that seemed all too real, but I could not even remember the face of the girl. Of course, since I had never seen the girl the realtor spoke of (by god, I wasn’t even alive then) my vision of her probably wouldn’t have been that accurate.
Her death didn’t make this house scary; it just made it morbid and sad. An accident it really was. In fact, I actually found it a little strange. The realtor said the wood was very sturdy so at the time no one would’ve guessed that a girl under the weight of fifty pounds could’ve broken it.
“You alright?” Isis’s voice was groggy and garbled since she was just coming out of her sleep.
“I am just fine.”
“You are sweating.” She suddenly sat up beside me to eye me carefully. “Bad dream?”
“I guess…” I didn’t want to tell her about it because that would be just enough to set her off about “signs” again.
“Well, since you won’t tell me then I will go back to bed. I don’t want to be drowsy when the medium comes.”
The medium.
I suppressed a groan and began my way over to the bathroom. The medium would make Isis happy but I don’t think I could handle it in a room with two strong believers in ghosts. I just hope they don’t try and make me believe that would be not only uncomfortable but very irritating.
I heard the sound of claws clicking as Zeus came by my side. He always had that affect to hardwood floors. Isis got annoyed of that noise very easily but it didn’t really bother me.
“Sorry to wake you boy.” I apologized raking my hand over his head and patting him kindly. I turned back over to the mirror and ran my hands under the sink and splashed cold water onto my face.
Zeus followed me as I moved back over the bed and tried to get back to sleep. Once again he took his favorite spot beside me and quickly dozed off. I wasn’t so lucky.
(Author’s Note: I know I haven’t written this story for a while and I am sorry about the length. I really wanted to write this chapter today but I have to go somewhere and will have no time to do it later. Tell me your honest opinion!)
