-Chapter Seventeen-

“So how was your night?” Allie asked me once we were both strolling along the beach. He didn’t bother to hide his smile; he knew it was hell.

“Terrible.” I grumbled and he chuckled quietly. “But… now that I think about it you may be right about what you said earlier. I believe she is acting.”

“And my being right surprises you?”

“No because I mean you are always right.”

“I know.” He said it with such confidence it made me begin to wonder if he really did think that of himself. He probably does considering that big ego of his.

“So how was your night?”

“It was okay, but it is hard to sleep with an attractive woman in the house.” I whammed him in the shoulder as Alejandro said it and he gawked at me in surprise. “What? Oh sorry what I meant was… it’s hard to sleep when…” It was obvious he had no excuse so I just rolled my eyes.

“I don’t care if you think I am ugly…” He opened his mouth to protest but I smiled. “You’re my cousin. If you thought I was hot then I might be worried.” It worked he laughed, we both did. “So…” I started, changing the subject. “How’s that mysterious girl you make out with one the beach?”

“Which one?” Alejandro asked with a cheeky smile.

“The one I caught you with.”

“Eh, we are kind of over… even though we were never going out… just making out.” He flexed his shoulders and closed his eyes. “You are still dying to know her name, aren’t you?”

“Of course,” my voice was impatient and eager which made him laugh.

“Estelle.”

“Are you serious? Her name isn’t…” He interrupted me with a headshake and my lips turned into a pout. I couldn’t even tease him about a girl with a funny name; how fun. A funny nickname would even please me but she probably had none.

“How old is Liza?” Alejandro suddenly asked and I groaned obnoxiously.

“I don’t know… old?”

“I’d guess around mid-thirties but she looks like she works out. Do you think I’d be able to steal her from your papi?” I hated where this conversation was going. Not only was I sickened by his infatuation with her but I couldn’t even stand thinking about Liza.

“I am going to swim. Talk about blondie amongst yourself.” I immediately ripped off my clothes to reveal my swimsuit and ran full speed at the ocean. I came out here to swim not talk or think about one of the people I hate. Alejandro was surprised and maybe a bit perturbed at my hasty movement but he soon joined me.

The water was cold and of course salty. There was so much sand beneath and I knew the current would blow it against me and cause some small irritating bumps; it always did. A splash erupted to my right and it was opposite of the current so the culprit was obvious.

“Why am I not surprised?” I said aloud as I forced a wave of water in Alejandro’s direction. He laughed and I smirked and pretty soon it was a water battle to the death. I was surprised that he didn’t bother to get some squirt guns like last time.

Only one person could ruin this moment and that stupid imbecile just had to come and do so.

“Ew. You do know you are getting sand and creepy micro beings in your hair?” Becca scorned with a curled lip and a pointed nose. What a fun sucker she was.

“Yeah we know.” I flashed my best smirk and splashed a huge pile of water at her. Of course she turned to shades of purple and blue while Alejandro and I chortled with laughter. It was an image I would never forget and, of course, I didn’t have a camera. What a pity.

But the next thing that happened almost had me going into shock. Becca jumped into the water and splashed me with a force I never knew she had. This time it was her and Alejandro laughing. I turned over and glared at him which led to me splashing him once more. It was strange. We were like this for many minutes to come it was like nothing ever happened. Like there was no tension. And Becca was laughing which made it even stranger.

“Lunch!” Lupe called and even from her distance I could see a huge smile on her face. Great, hopefully she doesn’t think I’ve turned all soft.

“I am majorly hungry!” Allie exclaimed putting his hand over his stomach and quickly running back home. I slowly made my way onto the shore and left my clothes on the beach like he had. I looked over my shoulder once to see Becca staring off onto the water. She’d follow after later.

It was almost disgusting watching Alejandro shovel down food. Lupe even whacked the back of his head and said something along the lines of “have good manners”. He rolled his eyes and went back to eating as if she hadn’t said anything. I kept my eyes down and sometimes closed to avoid seeing the grotesqueness.

“Where’s Liza?” I heard him ask and his mouth sounded clear so I thought it was an okay time to open my eyes. Damn, he was already done; he really must’ve been hungry.

“Your father is showing her and Hal around town.”

“Lucky for him.” I grumbled and the two of them shot me a warning glare. “Are you guys related?” My voice was extremely sarcastic which made Allie kick me under the table. “OW!” I howled and kicked him back even harder.

“Enough!” Lupe’s eyes flickered between us and we obeyed but I knew he’d get revenge somehow.

Just as I was on my last bite Becca joined us at the table, said nothing, and began to eat. Such a different person she was, it was almost like the whole splashing thing never happened. Maybe she’s bipolar.

“Hey Sonny.” Alejandro greeted with a smile and I turned over to glance at our friend. Should’ve figured he would come. It is lunchtime. This was like his second family so it was no surprise that Lupe gestured for him to take a seat.

“You excited about seeing your Mom?” Becca’s voice broke my thoughts and I brought my attention over to her. She wasn’t looking at me. Actually I had almost forgotten that I would be able to see my mom soon.

“Yeah, are you excited about sharing a plane ride with me?” She didn’t respond and I hadn’t expected her to anyway. I looked over at Sonny and Alejandro who were laughing at something.

“What’s so funny?” I asked and that just made them laugh harder. It was like déjà vu of the first day I met Sonny. Those two better now be laughing at me again. “What did I do this time?”

“Nothing… at… all…” Allie choked out between giggles and I threw my napkin over at him. It hit him directly in the face and he stumbled in his chair and eventually fell backwards. Now it was my turn to go into hysterics and go into hysterics is exactly what I did. Even Becca laughed.

“Not funny.” He muttered as he righted his chair up and plopped back down on it. Allie gave me a hard glower before crossing his arms across his chest. Sometimes he was such a baby.

“It was just a napkin.”

“Yeah but it covered my vision and made me fall to my death.” I rolled my eyes at his comment and opened my mouth to counter his melodramatic statement but Becca beat me to it.

“You should really join the theatre.”

“You should too just to improve your acting skills.” I murmured under my breath and her eyes averted over to me. She seemed confused and was eyeing me carefully.

“What did you say?” Her voice was abruptly sharp.

“Oh, nothing.”
