Fighting the Impossible : The Curse

Fiction Created on 9-1-07 Views(236) Story Rating G

I was fifteen years old when I learned of the burden I was destined to bear as soon as I turned eighteen. I was mortified, to say the least. I had always dreamed of finding my fairytale ending. Falling in love, getting married...all of it. It was hard to hear that it would never happen. Not to mention that I found out from the one person I thought I could depend on. My mother, right before she passed.
I cried for an immeasurable length of time that day. The day I found out the whole story about my family...

My mother had told me the story of our curse. I couldn't be sure if this was true because this story has been passed through generations. I found out for sure on my eighteenth birthday. But before I dive into that story, my history.
The Sephiroth bloodline goes back for generations. It started with my great-great-great grandmother in France in 1769. Her name was Adele Delven. When she was eighteen years old, she married a man named Guillio Sephiroth. He was an Italian man visiting France. They fell in love at first site. They were very happy, in love, and - though they didn't know it - in serious trouble.
You see, Guillio was admired by the town's accused witch. When Guilio chose Adele over her, she was, to say the least, angry. She was so angry at this happy couple, that she placed a curse over the Sephiroth bloodline. This curse would only affect the women because a woman is the one who stole Guillio from her. From then on, the women of the Sephiroth line would never marry or fall in love at the age of eighteen ever again. This curse has been in affect for a very long time and has filled the Sephiroth women with misery for over 230 years. Until now...

You may be asking yourself 'If the women can't fall in love or get married, how are you here?' but some of you may not be. The answer is quite simple. The women can't fall in love or get married after the age of eighteen, but before then, they are free to love and marry whomever they so choose. My mother fell in love with my father when she was sixteen. When she was seventeen, they were married and 5 months later, I was born. When my mother tunred eighteen however, my father left.
I don't know who my father is and - even though it wasn't his fault  I don't care.
But my story, unfortunately, is a little more complicated than my mother's.
My own personal curse started 4 months before my eighteenth birthday. It was December 6th right now, and my birthday was exactly 3 months away. My best friend in the whole world Luna was trying to convince me to do something special for it. We were in school and on our way to 8th period lunch.
"Come on Vi," she was saying. "You're going to be 18! This is a big deal!"
    I rolled my eyes.
"Luna, how many times do I have to say it? No! No parties, no presents, no nothing." I hated when people made a big deal about birthdays. Especially this one. Especially mine.
Luna didn't know about my curse. She would just think I'm crazy or over-exaggerating. In fact, Luna didn't know a whole lot about any kind of hardship. She was the popular girl of our school. You know the type. The one everyone wants to be. She was rich, beautiful, smart, the whole shabang. It was mostly the guys that noticed her and they only noticed her beauty. They thought she was so hot, that they all dubbed her "Lucious Luna". Fact of the matter is, I don't even know why we were friends. We were so different.
"Come on, Vi," she was still whining as we walked into the cafeteria. "Just one little party."
    "No," I said defiantly.
"Ugh!" she groaned. "You are so stubborn!"
"But you love me anyway," I joked.
We laughed. My eyes scanned the crowded lunchroom for a table. I found one that was practically empty except for one kid who was sitting and reading. I didn't really care who he was. My mind was wandering to 4 months from now..
"Come on," I said to Luna. "I found a table."
We walked to the table, set our books down, and took a seat. It was a rare occasion when we ate lunch. Luna resumed her feeble attempt at trying to get me to have a party.
"Vi please," she begged. "Please. Just one party. It will be very small, and I won't go overboard. You're going to be eighteen, for Christ's sake! You're about to graduate! Just one farewell bash. We might as well go out with a bang. Please."
I looked at her and she was watching me with her unbeatable puppy-dog face. This was so unfair! She knew I couldn't refuse that! But I had to. I looked away.
"No," I shook my head. " I don-" but I cut myself short. My eyes flickered to the kid at the other end of the table for only a moment, but a moment was all I needed.
He wasn't hot, like I bet some of you were thinking. He wasn't even all that cute. He had short, wavy black hair, that didn't fall in his face like many people always write, he was as white as a ghost, he had brown eyes, and thin, black-framed glasses resting on the bridge of his average nose. His lips were kind of thin, and I realized shortly thereafter, that they were moving. It was only then that I remembered he was reading a book. I caught a glimpse of the cover and saw that it was a Harry Potter book. A classic. Nice.
"Hello," Luna called. "Earth to Violet. Anybody home?" she saw who I was looking at and turned back to me. "Why are you staring at Jason Linley?" she asked. There was a - disgusted? - look on her face when I returned my eyes back to her.
The truth was, I didn't know why I was staring at him. His looks obviously didn't attract me. I guess the best way I could sum it up would be to say that there was something about him. I can't say what exactly, but there was something. Maybe I somehow notcied his book? I mean, I love Harry Potter.
As soon as that thought crossed my mind, the boy looked up. He looked over at me and his brown eyes bored into my own chocolate ones. I smiled, and he looked back down. Without thinking, I turned to Luna.
"Hold on a minute," I told her. "I'll be right back."
I stood up, and walked to the end of the table. I could feel Luna's eyes getting wide as they followed my back. I sat down across from Jason and just looked at him. He didn't even seem to notice me there. Then I spoke.
"So you like Harry Potter?" I asked.
He looked up, startled, then answered me warily. "I'm only on book 3, but so far yea." He paused, then he asked me a question. "Why are you talking to me?"
"I'm Violet Sephiroth," I told him.
"I know that, but that's not what I asked you," he said and he smiled. I couldn't help but smile back.
"I saw you reading Harry Potter and thought I'd ask you about it," I answered weakly. I didn't actually know why I was here.
    "Uh-huh," he said.
"So how do you know who I am?" I asked him.
    "You're in my AP History."
I blushed. I probably should've known that. I wiped a piece of my red hair out of my face to cover the blush. "Oh," I said simply.
The bell rang then and he got up and walked away, leaving me there completely confused.
