Fighting the Impossible : The Plot Unfolding

Drama Created on 11-27-07 Views(167) Story Rating G
Okay everyone. I’m sorry about that cliffhanger and not explaining what exactly she told him, but this is the chapter where the plot unfolds. I hope it gets more interesting in the progressing chapters, but one can only hope, right?? I know the cliffhanger wasn’t terribly exciting, but hey, I tried. Enjoy!

“Wait, wait, wait,” Jason started. “You’re telling me that the reason you can’t go out with me is because you’re cursed? Man, Violet, I’ve heard some lame excuses, but that’s just cruel. If you didn’t want to go out with me all you had to do was say so. I mean, cursed?”

Jason and I were standing in the field again. After I told him I had something to tell him in the hallway, we decided that the hallway wasn’t the best place for that conversation. We went to the field. Still snowing, still not caring. At least, not about the snow.

“I know, I know. It sounds like a load of crap, but Jason,” I said softy. It hurt that he wouldn’t even consider that I might be telling the truth, though I must admit, it is far-fetched, “I need you to believe me. You have to believe me. It’s the truth. Look at me.” He had turned his head.

“How can I look at you when you’re lying to my face?”

Ouch. That hurt. I turned on my heel and started to walk back up the hill, but he caught my wrist and turned me around.

He stared at me with confused, hurt, and angry eyes. “I’m trying to believe you, Violet, I really am, but can you at least see what you’re trying to make me believe? Your family is plagued by a curse that is over 200 years old and that prevents you from falling in love when you hit the age of 18, which happens to be in February, 2 months away from now, not even? It’s just not something I can swallow without the slightest hint of doubt.”

He was right. I knew he was right; still, it hurt that he wouldn’t keep an open mind about this. I resorted to the only thing I could do to assure he would believe me.

“Jason,” I said, “Look me in the eye, and tell me I’m lying to you. Please. If you can do that, I’ll leave and you can hate me for the rest of forever. I promise. ‘My word is my bond,’” I quoted. I looked him the eye with an intensity that would burn the sun. I knew he couldn’t say I was lying because I wasn’t and it would show if I was.

“I…I,” he stuttered to start and that made me a little over-confident of his answer.

“I know you’re not lying,” he said, and my heart inflated. Yes! He believed me! He believed me!

“Thank you,” I whispered, and hugged him so tightly, I thought I might break him. I kissed his cheek, turned around and started to walk again. Half way up the hill, he grabbed my wrist again.

“Where are you going?” he asked smirking. God, I loved that smirk.

“Uhh…school. You know, the place we learn? I admit, it’s a loose interpretation of word learn, what they teach us there, but still,” I said sarcastically.

“No,” he said, “I meant why are you leaving? We have some unfinished business.”

Uh-oh, I thought. I was hoping to avoid this. He wanted to know if we could till date now that he knew what was destined to happen to me.

Of course you can’t! I yelled at myself, It’s much too dangerous! You could hurt him!But he knows now, I countered myself. He knows what will happen. Why not milk it for what it’s worth?

As the argument went back and forth in my head, Jason was still holding on to my wrist expectantly.

“We can’t,” I whispered.

“Why not?” he countered.

“You know why not.”

“I don’t care,” he told me, and the fire in the eyes burned magnificently, and I believed him. “As I have said many a time, ‘Just because you don’t think something will work, doesn’t mean it can’t’”

There was not a single doubt in my mind that I wanted to be with Jason. The curse didn’t matter. None of it mattered. The only question bouncing around in my mind now was…How can we make this work?

It’s been two weeks since Jason had told me he didn’t care what would happen to me. He only cared about what happened to us. It sounds crazy, but I wish that witch was still alive so I could burn her. Or do something else. Maybe if she was killed by a Sephiroth, the curse would end. Maybe…but life wasn’t based on ‘maybes’ or ‘what ifs’. It was based on actual reality. And this, here, Jason and me…we were actual reality.

Still, as I was thinking about this, I brought my hand to my mouth and started to bite my left thumb immediately. Jason knew.

            “What’s wrong?” he asked.

I stared at the ground ahead of me, avoiding his eyes. Mistake number two.

“Okay,” he said. I was done. “Now I know something’s wrong. You bit your left thumb nail and you won’t make eye contact with me. You were thinking about something, and talking about it makes you nervous. Spill.”

“Fine,” I said reluctantly. There was no hiding from someone who knew you as well as you knew yourself.

“I was thinking that I wished the witch who cursed my family was still alive so I could burn her or kill her because maybe if she was killed by a Sephiroth, the curse would end.” I was waiting for the part where he told me I was crazy. He didn’t say anything.

            “Well is she?” he asked.

            “Is she what?”

“Is the witch alive?” This was unbelievable! He was actually asking me this! But, then again, it wasn’t such a crazy thought.

“Violet?” he broke me out of my thoughts.
            “Hmm?” I said.

“What do you think?” he asked. Admittedly I was skeptical, but hey, maybe we could try.

“Well, we could try. I’m not entirely sure if she will be, but you never know. Let’s do it.”

And this is where it all unfolds…
