Chapter 1
Dear Diary,
Today was the first day at my new school. I just moved from New York City to here in Kimball, Nebraska. It’s the middle of winter, but no snow on the ground yet. I’m huge city girl and my parents had to move here to the stupid country because of family reasons. I was made fun of and picked on, just because I was different from everyone else. All the country boys and redneck girls think they know it all. I hate them. I hate them all. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to find any new friends or another boyfriend like I did back home. If only I could go back home, with them again and live this hick town. I’d be one happy camper again.
Sincerely,
Rose
I close my diary and look out across the field, underneath the tall oak tree in my backyard. I start to weep as I think about this hellhole of a place. Only five minutes later and I decide to go back inside the house as the sun began to set behind me. I walk in through the sliding doors to the house, closing them once I was in and I went downstairs in the basement to the bedroom. The house was tiny, but my room was huge. I was the oldest out of my brother, Caleb, and I. (He’s five.)
My room was filled with Nickelback posters along with The Jonas Brothers, my two favorite bands of all time. Around here, people are more into country music, but I despise it. It makes me sick just thinking about it.
It was only nine o’clock, but I went to bed anyway, just so I can be ready for another embarrassing day at school tomorrow. I thought about what it would be like if I had a day without being made fun of. I smiled to myself.
“Yeah, that’d be the day,” I said to myself.
I roll over to my side and I hear footstep coming down the stairs. It was my mom. She knows she isn’t supposed to come down to my room, unless I say otherwise.
“Well, you’re in bed early for a seventeen year old,” she told me.
“Yeah, but I really wanted to get to sleep, just so I could prepare being humiliated by the complete school again, like today.” I reply, turning on to my back and looking up at the ceiling.
“Hun, I promise you that you’ll make new friends, and you won’t be made fun of by most people.” She said.
“Yeah, but since we’re in the country, no one wants to talk or see any city people around here. I bet I’ll be teased for life.” I sneer, throwing my purple throw pillow at the wall.
“Rose, why don’t you get some rest, ok? Your day shouldn’t be as bad as what it was today. You’re the new girl. Before you know it, someone else will be the new kid and they’ll get picked on and…”
She was rambling on and on about something, but I didn’t listen. Sometimes she gets really annoying. I turned on my side so I was facing the wall. I closed my eyes and drift off into a deep, deep sleep.
