Chapter 4

Jason and I went through town for about an hour and then he walks me home. I live right in town so that’s a good thing.

“I’ll see you tomorrow, Jason. And thanks for showing me around. I learned a lot.” I smile, as we walk up on to my front porch.

“No problem, I’ll see you tomorrow.” He replies, walking away from my house not saying anything else. I stare down at him as he heads down the street. I rush through the door and let myself in. I saw my dad stare over at me from the couch once I notice he was watching a rerun of a football. I think it was the Atlanta, Falcons against the Philadelphia, Eagles, but I wasn’t sure.

“Well, you’re home late. What took you so long? And who was that guy that walked you home?” my father questions.

“Dad relax. That guy happens to be Jason. I ran into him at school,” I laugh.

“Literally?” he smiles.

“Yeah,” I smile back.

“Rose, you can be such a klutz, just like your mother.” He replies, but the smile sweeps away from his face as if something was wrong.

“Dad, is there something wrong?” I ask.

“No sweetie.” I sigh.

“Where is mom?” I wonder.

“She’s outside with Caleb.” He said.

“Alright, I’m going down to my room, so holler if suppers ready.” I told him.

He nods and went back to watching TV. I rush across the living room and head downstairs to my room. I hear my mom and brother outside from down in my room. I plop onto my bed and grab my diary from under my bed. I roll onto my stomach and reach over to my nightstand and grab a blue pen from it. I started to write:

Well, today didn’t go too terribly bad. I actually thought it was nice. I literally run into an amazing guy today at school named Jason. He showed me around town and stuff. I don’t think we are close to being friends, but almost. I really like him, but I’m sure he doesn’t like me back. Of course he’s nice and all, but I know for a fact he isn’t the kind of guy to fall for me.

“Rose! Supper’s ready!” my father yells down the stairs.

“I’ll be up in a minute.” I shout back.

My dad just called me up for supper. So I guess I’ll end this by say, “I had an awesome day at school at it was only my second day.” I don’t think it can get any better.

Rose

I close my diary with my pen still in the page and tossed it under my bed. I run up the stairs, nearly falling up them. I turn off my light to my room and close the door behind me. Dad and Caleb are both sitting at the table, waiting for mom to get the food out of the oven.

I’m the only vegetarian in the family, so I didn’t eat what everyone else had. I took a seat between mom and dad as Caleb sat across from me. My mother dishes out a plate of Tofu for me, (Tofu is a food of Chinese origin, made by coagulating soy milk, and then pressing the resulting curds into block. It has very little flavor or smell on its own, so it can be used either in savory or sweet dishes, and is often seasoned or marinated to suit the dish, for those that don’t know.)

She gave everyone else chicken, but they had to have tofu on the side, so I wouldn’t be left out. My mom sits down and pushes her chair in. We don’t say grace, so we just dig in.

“Rose, how was school today?” mom asks.

“Pretty good I guess. A lot better than yesterday,” I reply.

“Your father told me that you met a guy at school.” She smiles.

“Yeah, but we aren’t really friends. Well, not that I know of. We just met. He showed me around town and I got to see new things today.” I told her.

“Well, that was nice of him. Do you know if he wants to be friends?” she questions me.

“Actually, I don’t know.” I said, talking a cube of my tofu and looking at it then digging into it.
