Chapter 6

I sat next to Kendra at lunch as her boyfriend, Kyle, was sitting next to her. I could tell that he didn’t really want to sit with us, but Kendra made him.

“So, why did you want me to sit with you today? I don’t mind, it’s just that I’m not like everyone else and everyone seems to be so rude around here in this small school,” I say.

“Well, I know that being the new girl is harsh. Plus, you’re from the city and a lot of people in this school don’t get along very well with people like you. I was in the same circumstances as you.” She explains.

“Really?” I said, amused and surprised.

“Yeah, I’m initially from LA, but my parents moved her, so there wouldn’t be so much drama and riff-raff as there is in the city.”

I didn’t say anything but nod my head, so she knew I was listening to her. We didn’t say much for the next five minutes.

“So are you and Jason dating?” Kendra asks, before she takes a sip of her water. Kyle tries sneaking away from the table just so he could sit with his “guy friends,” but Kendra saw him in the corner of her eye and grabs his arm and makes him sit down. She didn’t even glance over at him. Kyle looks like he’s getting very infuriated by all this. I try not to snicker.

“No, I don’t know if we’re even friends.” I tell her.

“What do you mean you don’t know if your friends? I’ve seen the way Jason gazes at you in class. It’s pretty funny. I notice him looking over at you, as he bites his lip like you are the most amazing thing he’s ever seen,” Kendra smiles.

“And how do you know that’s what gives you the impression that he likes me?” I question.

“I’m his step-sister. I’ve known him for a while. He does that every time he sees a cute girl go by. I haven’t seen him do it lately. Also, he stares at you differently than all the rest.” She stated.

“I have noticed him staring at me an awful lot, but I don’t think he likes me. I’m not like everybody around here.” I said.

“Yeah, but that’s the thing. That’s what he likes about you. You’re different. He’s not into all of the high maintenance girls in the school. Even if you’re from the city, he’ll teach you a few things about it here. At first, when my mom married his dad, I didn’t like Jason much. I always thought he was an asshole, but once I really got to know him, he’s actually a devoted guy.” She replies.

I smile and look down at my food in front of me that I barely even touched.

“Would you ever reflect on asking him out?” Kendra questions me.

“I don’t have the guts to. Jason is a nice guy; I’ll admit it, but I never asked a guy out in my life, they’ve always asked me out. Besides, what if he’d say no? Then what? I’ll feel like a giant embarrassment for my entire life.” I told her.

“Rose, I was through the same thing with Kyle,” she whispers, even though he wasn’t listening anyway. He was too busy chatting to his friends behind him at another table. “What if I called Jason over here? Would you ask him?”

“NO! No fucking way! I’m not asking him. I’ll start stammering and get all sweaty and feel uneasy.” I respond.

“Does that mean that you have affection for him too?” she smirks.

“I didn’t say that. I’d get that way around any guy,” I said.

“You didn’t have to tell me. I just good like that.” She laughs.

“What are you cupid or something?” I ask a dumb question.

She chuckles. “I’m like the love doctor when you come to think of it. It all depends on who the people are.”

I roll my eyes and laugh.

“Hey you two! What are you’s up to,” Jason questions, coming up from behind me. I felt my palms getting clammy.

Kendra opens her mouth as if she was going to say something, then looks over at me. “Just talking to my new friend.” She said.

“Well that’s good. I know that Rose doesn’t go well with a lot of the kids in the school.” He smiles.

I smile back, but it was more of a worried smile. I look down at the table I was sitting at. How can I find out that Jason likes me, but not letting him know my true affection for him?
