The Coma

Lydia groaned as she slid into the passenger seat of the small brown car. In the rearview mirror she spotted the small car seat that was still secured in the backseat. In the center a soft green blanket was bunched. She imagined little Jacob lying in there, safe and secure, but the image quickly faded as she realized the silk of her black dress was caught in the door. She cursed loudly and tugged until it came loose.

“Lydia, it’s okay.” Caitlyn, her best friend, said as she leaned over and rested a reassuring hand on Lydia’s shoulder. Lydia looked up, tears stricken her eyes. She quickly blinked them away before looking ahead again.

“Well, we better get going.” Lydia said quickly, not wanting to be the spotlight of attention. Usually she would have loved it, she begged for attention. Today she just wanted to be left alone. She reached up and pulled the mirror down from the visor. Quickly she reconstructed her hair into a tight pony tail and marveled herself momentarily. The black eyeliner she was wearing was too thick and uneven from crying, but she didn’t really care. She smudged her fingers over the bottom of her eyes as a sad attempt at fixing it but gave up quickly.

“You look great, Lydia.” Caitlyn said, turning to look at her while driving farther down the long bumpy road.

“Watch the road.” Lydia said, her voice emotionless and yet almost unbearable. She quickly looked down, a sinking feeling in her stomach from the site of the objects all flying by so quickly. She stared at the brown carpet of the car, memorizing it. Little bits of garbage lay scattered around her black high heels.

Again the image of Jacob lying safe in the car seat behind her filled her mind. The soft green blanket wrapped around his tiny body, warming him. His eyes shut as he cooed gently in his sleep to the hum of the motor. Her husband Joey, sitting in the passenger seat next to her, would reach back just to touch his face and make sure he was okay. From the smile on Joey’s face, you would think he was the luckiest man on earth.

Again she was woken up from her dreams as the car came to a sudden halt. She gasped and looked up quickly. Caitlyn peered over at her and sighed a silent apology before shutting the engine off.

“We’re here.” She whispered as she opened the door and slowly stepped out. Lydia again looked back at the car seat, wishing that Jacob would be there, but again he was nowhere to be found and the green blanket lay untouched.

“Okay.” She said quietly and stepped out of the car herself. She pulled her black dress out of the way and slammed the car door shut as tears filled her eyes again. She looked up, to where the sun would be if the clouds weren’t covering the sky, and quickly blinked the tears away before following Caitlyn up to the large church doors.

A man in an all black tuxedo stood at the doors waiting to take bags, hats, and coats. Lydia handed him her small purse and walked in, it was too warm to wear a coat anyways. Caitlyn followed her in, but grasped her hand after the first few steps. She looked over and gave Caitlyn a look of thanks.

The room was crowded and part of Lydia had wished that no one would have came. As she looked ahead she realized what she was up against, she didn’t know how she was going to do this without Joey here. A large sign at the front of the room read, Visitation of Jacob Edward Andrews – 5-9pm, and she sighed at the site of it.

She looked ahead and tears filled her eyes as she saw the small casket at the end of the room. The wood was light brown and red velvet filled the inside, but nothing was pretty enough for her Jacob.

“I guess I should be up there by him.” She whispered to Caitlyn, who looked over at her concerned.

“Will you be okay? Do you want me to come up with you?” Lydia shook her head quickly and let go of Caitlyn’s hand. She slowly walked through the crowd to the casket and peered down inside. A round face with closed eyes and a head of brown hair with a small chubby body lay inside. He was dressed in a small black onesy, the only thing small enough for him. His skin was way to pale and Lydia couldn’t help herself as she reached down to touch his small face.

“I love you.” She whispered to him quietly, “Daddy does too.” Tears fell from her eyes and landed atop his face and she quickly brushed them away, but still leaving small wet smudges against his perfect face. A man wearing a dark blue suit walked up to her as she looked away from Jacob.

“I’m so sorry, Lydia.” He said quietly and leaned in, hugging her.

“Me too dad.” She said and hugged him back, crying into his arms.

“You know it’s not your fault, right sweetie?” He said quietly as he stopped hugging her and looked down at her. She looked down at Jacob again and sighed.

“I don’t know dad.” She whispered as her fingers automatically pulled downwards and started tracing Jacob’s face.

“I know you will think that for a while. I just want you to know, no one blames you. This wasn’t your fault.”

“Okay dad.” She said, tears still pouring out of her eyes as she stared down at Jacob and listened to her dad talk.

“How is Joey doing?” Her dad, John, whispered. She looked up at him and sighed quietly.

“He hasn’t woken up yet. The doctors don’t think he ever will.” She started crying again, “Daddy I miss them both so much.” She fell into his arms and cried harder.

“Baby, it will be okay.” He told her, and rubbed her back as she cried hard into his arms. A woman walked up next to them and wrapped her arms around Lydia.

“Mom!” She shouted in a rage of sobs and tears.

“It’s okay honey.” Her mother, Joanna said quietly, patting her back in a motherly way. Her pink dress stood out against all the people dressed in black and as Lydia stopped crying she looked at it oddly.

“Mom, why are you wearing that?” Her voice cracked repeatedly as she talked, but she didn’t care enough to try and stop it.

“Well, whether I am at a funeral or not I need to look beautiful. Black just doesn’t suit my style. I need to find a husband you know, now that your father and I are no longer together.” She smiled widely and her white teeth shown in the light.

“Joanna, that’s just not right. You need to leave.” Lydia stood back as her father told her mother that. She nodded slightly, but honestly didn’t care; the only thing that mattered right now was staying next to Jacob. Making sure that Jacob wasn’t alone was a big thing to her, whether he was alive or not, he was her baby.

“Jacob Edward Andrews, I love you.” She whispered, staring down into the casket yet again. His innocent face stared up at her with closed eyes and pale cheeks. She could hear her parents fighting in the background and saw other people walking up to see Jacob, but turning back when they saw her. She knew she was supposed to let them see him, but she wanted him all to herself. She had a strange urge to pick him up and hold him, pretend he was only sleeping.

The day went slowly, but soon it came to an end. Thousands of visitors came to see his body, but Lydia didn’t see anyone that had felt the pain she had. She couldn’t imagine that it was even possible for someone to feel the pain she was going through.

Caitlyn walked over to her slowly at the end of the service and waited as Lydia said her last goodbye. She leaned over Jacob’s casket and gave him a gentle kiss on his pale forehead. She didn’t stand up quickly, she stayed leaned over him, never wanting to lose the last moment she would ever see him.

“Goodbye Jacob.” She whispered as she started to stand up slowly, “I love you.” She knew she still had tomorrow to say another goodbye, but this was the last time she could look at his face. The last time she could kiss his cheek, pale or not, the last time she could hold his hand and touch his soft skin. The last time she could hug him or be proud of him. Today was the last of a lot of things, though they had barely even started.

She walked to the car with Caitlyn by her side, neither of them able to speak. Lydia figured that Caitlyn just didn’t know what to say because she didn’t know of her pain. How could she? Lydia looked over at Caitlyn whose head was faced downwards looking at the ground as she walked slowly beside Lydia.

“It’s okay to talk.” Lydia whispered, her voice still cracked but she knew whether or not she was sad, she had to be strong for her friends as well. She couldn’t let any of them see the pain that was welling inside of her body, pulsing from her stomach to her heart and up to her throat like a large bug, leaving eggs as it went.

“I don’t know what to say.” Caitlyn replied as she slowly turned her head to look at Lydia, her eyes red from tears that Lydia hadn’t even known she cried. Lydia stopped walking and turned towards Caitlyn who stopped after Lydia did to see what she was doing.

“Why are we stopping?” She asked quietly, unable to look Lydia in the eyes as she stood there. Thunder pounded in the background telling them that a storm was approaching, but the sky overhead was a nice shade of blue with very few clouds.

“You need to talk, but you won’t. Why won’t you talk to me Caitlyn?” Lydia asked with her voice full of pain and concern. She couldn’t hide the emotion held within her voice and eyes, but she could try. And she did, she tried as hard as she could as she started to talk again, “You’re my best friend Caitlyn.”

“Okay, I get it. I will talk to you.” Caitlyn said, trying to sound sarcastic but failing miserably making her voice sound even more depressed. “I only met him once, Lydia, and I still miss him more than the whole fucking world. You-you got him for a matter of days. I understand I’m not going to feel the pain that you do. But I can’t help but feel I lost something more important that anything I’ve ever dreamt of.” Her paragraph was stretched out into a long matter of vowels that seemed incoherent to Lydia who stood staring at her with wide eyes.

She didn’t know why, but she couldn’t understand anything that was going on around her. She shook her head quickly as she realized that Caitlyn had stopped talking. She nodded and leaned in and hugged her. She wasn’t why exactly she had hugged her, maybe it was because she needed it or maybe she thought it was what Caitlyn needed, but for some reason it seemed the right thing to do.

“We should probably go.” Caitlyn said as Lydia released her hold. She nodded as she started walking towards the car and groaned as she got in. “Are you okay?” Caitlyn asked concerned as she heard the groan. Lydia nodded and held her stomach with seatbelt secured as Caitlyn started the engine. The hum in her ears was enough to put Lydia to sleep if she wasn’t terrified of the car itself.
