Lydia smiled and set the note down, turning to look at where he meant Emily was. Her crib was placed on the other side of the nightstand, inside she was smiling happily. Slowly and quietly she edged out of the room and towards the kitchen to eat whatever breakfast Sam was talking about.
She looked in the fridge and just as he had said, there sat a plate filled with eggs, bacon, and sausage. She smiled and pulled it out, shoved it into the microwave, and when it was done, ate it quickly.
When she had done she decided she was going to go back to her house and try to start cleaning up a bit, but when she put her plate in the sink she realized Jacob was standing right there next to her.
“Jacob.” She breathed. He nodded, but didn’t move. “I have a question for you.”
“I know.” He answered, his voice was like velvet against her ears and she smiled.
“Why do you keep coming back?” Her smiled faded and soon they were just staring at each other in blank silence. “Well, that and what did you take from my trunk the day of the accident?”
“I was trying to get…The whistle.” He stared deep into Lydia’s eyes.
“But, Jacob, I found the whistle; it’s in the other room.”
“I know that’s because I couldn’t get it. Enphinious wouldn’t let me.”
“I don’t understand.” Lydia watched Jacob with a confused expression.
“Mom, I’m not supposed to be here.”
“But…” Lydia whispered, “Then why are you?”
“I’m only here because you can’t let me go.” With that, Jacob disappeared into the air. Lydia stared around the room, unable to completely take in what he had said, not yet. She sighed and strode off to the bedroom to get Emily before going out to the car.
She drove scared, back to Clinton. She pulled into her driveway and jumped out of the car quickly, shaking just as much or more than the day before. She calmed herself, staring out at the house. It was a light blue color, almost the color of the sky on a cloudless day. The windows hard white shutters, the kind they usually don’t make anymore, and a light brown wooden door was placed directly in the center. In her yard there was one tree planted to the side of the driveway, closer to the house a small garden was set, but most of the flowers were either gone or hadn’t been there to start with.
Lydia breathed in deeply before turning around to pull Emily and her diaper bag out of the car. They walked up to the house and Lydia fumbled around for her keys for a while before finally getting the door open. The mess of boxes greeted the two of them as they entered. Lydia knew this would be a long day.
She walked towards where the living room would be if it weren’t crowded with boxes and set Emily on the floor atop a blanket. Lydia dragged a box over and began her work digging through them all and separating what was inside so she could put it away. It was a tiring job, and most of the stuff was covered in dust that she quickly wiped away.
The day was boring and the hours seemed to drag on until she found a specific box filled with pictures. She had forgotten about this one and it scared her. She pulled out the stack of framed pictures and started going through them to decide where to put them.
The first was Joey and her on their wedding day. They were smiling at the camera, hands held tightly together. Joey was in his nice black suit with a light blue tie and Lydia was wearing her wedding gown. It was simple, yet beautiful. The next picture was of the two of them on their honey moon.
Lydia remembered how happy they had been then with nothing but the two of them, the ocean, and the sand. Tears filled her eyes as she went through the rest of the pictures, all of her and Joey. It scared her when she thought that they weren’t going to be like that anymore, and she didn’t want to think of it.
She quickly placed them as far away from her as possible and wiped her eyes before starting another box with nothing in mind except getting Joey off her mind. Her stomach finally growled loudly after the hours of labor and she looked up at the clock realizing how late it was. Sam was going to be worried. Not yet, they weren’t late yet, but even if they set off driving right now she knew they wouldn’t make it home until a half hour after he had.
Quickly she grabbed Emily and they started the drive back to Sam’s house. A bag of clothes were shoved in the back so that she could have something to change into at his house. Emily cried the whole way it seemed, but Lydia knew it was only because she missed her dad.
Finally they made it to Sam’s house. As they walked in Lydia saw Sam pacing the living room, a phone in his hand. He jumped excitedly when he realized that she was watching him and ran over to her, taking Emily from her hands and hugging her as tight as he could.
“Where were you guys? I was so worried; you should have left a note or something. I’ve been calling everywhere but I didn’t know your cell number and-“
“Sam.” Lydia said, cutting off his long breathless speech. “It’s fine. I’m sorry. I was just at my house cleaning up, didn’t realize the time. I’ll give you my number so you can call next time okay?” She said, trying to comfort him. He smiled, nodded, and wiped his forehead as he took a deep breath in.
“Well, I trust you Lydia. It’s just, I had the feeling someone was going to – you know – die and for some reason I couldn’t figure out who it was. I was scared it might be Emily or you.” He stared at the floor, obviously ashamed and Lydia smiled, leaning over to hug him tightly.
“We’re fine. You have nothing to worry about.” She smiled and he smiled back.
“I found something for you.” He said quietly and reached into his pocket. He pulled out a white piece of paper and Lydia realized it was the back of a picture. She reached out and took it from his hands and stared at the face. Enphinious stared back at her, his deep blue eyes piercing into hers.
“Thanks.” She breathed the word, barely able to speak as she stared into the face of the killer.
“I wasn’t sure if, you know, maybe it would help. So I cropped one of my videos down and got the picture printed.” Lydia nodded along with him, though his words seemed incoherent to her. A long silence passed where even Emily didn’t make a sound, until finally Sam began to talk again.
“Are you ready for something to eat? I had brought home dinner, but it might be cold now. The microwave will warm it up pretty quick though. What do you say?” Lydia nodded, still barely paying attention to what he was saying as she moved along behind him to the kitchen almost magnetically. There were so many things running through her mind, she just couldn’t pay attention.
“Lydia, are you okay?” Sam said as he placed a plate of Chinese food and rice in front of her. She shook her head quickly, emptying her thoughts as she did.
“Yeah, I’m fine. Sorry. I just spaced out for a little bit there.” Sam stared at her for a while concerned.
“Yeah, I know.” And he sat down placing his own food in front of him.
