“Honey,” a man’s voice came from behind her. Lydia immediately distinguished it as Sam’s and sighed, the peaceful moment she was having lost.
“Yes.” She whispered and shivered again.
“Are you alright?” He whispered and wrapped his arms around her waist from behind.
“Yeah, I guess so.” She rested her arms on top of his and leaned back against his body. The warmth coming from him was enough to make her fall asleep again, but she didn’t want that.
“What’s wrong?” He whispered into her ear, his warm breath trickled down her neck and made her shiver again involuntarily.
“Nothing, I just had another nightmare.” She sighed again and closed her eyes against his chest, his heart beating softly in her ear.
“How about we go for a walk and talk about it.” Sam suggested, trying his best to make her feel better. She nodded and opened her eyes as his long arms untangled themselves from her body and she was left standing there. Sam grabbed her hand, realizing how she felt, and pulled her along with him back into the house to grab Emily.
As they left the house again, Emily still asleep in her stroller, Sam began to hum a soft lullaby. Lydia recognized it quickly as ‘Hush Little Baby’ and smiled as they walked through the dark alley.
Building loomed over them and the moon seemed to be nonexistent. Nothing but a streetlight lit the alley, the darkness unfolding and holding onto them in the never ending tunnel. Rain began to sprinkle lightly and Sam covered Emily’s stroller but kept on walking.
“So, tell me what happens in your dreams.” He whispered, still staring forward and squinting his eyes through the now pouring rain.
“Well, at first I was stuck in this room. It was all white with no windows or doors, but for some reason there was blood dripping on the floor. Then, for some reason, a door was suddenly there, so of course, I went through it.” She paused and he looked over at her and nodded, reassuring her that he understood what she was saying.
“The room was awful.” She looked at his rain-soaked hair for a moment, “it was filled with everything I’m scared of: Cars, cockroaches, spiders, snakes, my mom, the man she had an affair with, fire, Enphinious, lots of things.”
“Huh, that’s weird.”
“No kidding.” She brushed a dripping lock of hair out of her face before continuing. “Enphinious came at me like he was going to kill me, knife in his hand and everything. But he missed and hit Jacob, the older Jacob, in the heart-“
“The older Jacob?” Sam cut in, questioningly.
“I see Jacob as a ghost and talk to him. Because I’m insane, remember?” She smiled up at him, but he didn’t see her through the rain and darkness. “Anyways, Enphinious stabbed my Jacob in the heart and killed him. Then the room turned red, because of Jacob’s blood, and everything disappeared except me and Jacob. Then while I was looking down at him he kept getting younger and younger and all of a sudden he was my baby again.”
“Was he…alive?” Sam questioned as Lydia’s voice cracked again.
“No. I reached down to pick him up, but he turned to ashes and I couldn’t. He slipped through my fingers. He was dust. So, I picked up the knife, I fell to the floor, and was about to kill myself when I woke up.” She stared at the ground as they had come to a stop. Sam stared over at her, a look of amazement and sadness filling his eyes.
“Wow, I’m sorry Lydia.” She looked up at him, happy that it was raining so he couldn’t see the tears forcing their way down her cheeks. Sam let go of Emily’s stroller for a moment to lean over and hug Lydia tightly, their wet bodies warming at the touch.
“I’ll always be here for you Lydia. You remember that okay? It’s all going to be okay.” He whispered into her ear before letting go and looking down at the stroller. Thunder cracked loudly in the distance and woke Emily up quickly, making her scream loudly for Sam to pick her up. He walked over to the front of the stroller and leaned down, staring at the crying face of his little girl.
“Emy please don’t cry. I can’t carry you right now, I’m too wet and you’ll get sick. It’s too late Emy please, you’ll wake everyone.” He smiled at her, but she doubled over and cried louder than before.
“I think we better get home, huh Sam?” Lydia said, touching his shoulder lightly.
“Yeah, I agree.” Sam replied, turning the stroller around as the three of them headed back to the house. It was a longer walk than Lydia had imagined and by the time they got home, they had been screamed at by three people to make Emily stop crying and were soaked to the core with rain water.
“I’m going to go change, will you watch her?” Sam said as soon as they entered the house. “I need to get her to stop crying and the only way is to hold her.” Lydia nodded and Sam ran off to change his clothes.
He returned a few minutes later, holding out a towel for Lydia and smiling thanks for watching Emily. Lydia took the towel and started to the bedroom to change, but stopped in the living room on the way after seeing something she hadn’t seen before.
“Sam!” She screamed to him from the living room. She entered the living room; the place had been torn apart. VHS and DVD’s were strewn about the floor, the television was turned wrong, the couch cushions were lying on the floor, and everything was out of order.
“What?” Sam said, out of breath as he ran up behind her with Emily crying in his arms. He peeked over her shoulder and looked over the living room.
“I think someone got in.” Lydia breathed, moving over so he could get a better view. “I think I know who too.”
“Who would do this?”
“Your videos are missing. I think it was either Enphinious or his friend. It has to be. Who else would know what those were?” Her eyes scanned the room again before turning to look at Sam. “Did you tell anyone other than me?” She said sternly.
“No. I think you’re right. I think they’ve been here. When, I don’t know, but it must have been them.” He sighed and slumped down into the couch.
“I’m sorry Sam, if I hadn’t of went outside maybe…” Her voice trailed off as Sam shook his head.
“Its fine Lydia, I don’t watch those anyways. I only take them to see if he’s actually there. Do you know what I mean?” He looked over the couch at her and smiled.
“Don’t you think we should call the police?”
“What for? We know who it was, what are they going to do about Him? There’s really nothing that they can do. He never leaves finger prints, he’s undetectable. How do you think he gets away with all the deaths around the world?” Lydia nodded.
“Yeah, I guess you’re right. I’m going to go change.” She slid out of the room and went to put on dry clothes, deciding to take a shower as well.
