Starting Over-Ch.2-New LifeI've started part 3, tell me what you think
|
We pulled up to what was soon going to be my new high school. I was a junior and Kelly who was a freshman had a oversized hoodie on which I knew was going to be shoved in her bag revealing her skanky clothes she'd decided would be her best attempt at fitting in. Great my sister was going to be the school slut. We parked in the closest space to the front door and got out to walk up the huge amount of stairs that lead to the entrance. Mom lead the way as I hung back trying to be as far from possible from my family. Maybe someone might actually think that we're not related. It was really early morning so I assumed that everyone was in their first period class so I was glad we weren't walking in around lunch time because the front office was actually in the same space as the cafeteria. It was huge and bright. Yet empty. Two ladies sat behind the counter. A larger woman with gray short hair, and large glasses that were big enough to cover her eyes and half of her cheeks. The other a slim woman with brown curly hair, and looked like she was physically incapable of smiling. The larger woman turned to us, her name tag read Sherri Brown, and began to speak to us in a monotone voice like she was bored with everything. "How may I help you?" it seemed all so cliche. I expected it but never actually believed it would be just like in the movies. I couldn't help but chuckle, but tried to cover it up with a cough when it came out. "Yes, I need to register my two kids for school, we just moved here last week." she put on this huge smile revealing her perfect teeth. Mom loved to show off her looks. It was embarrasing having an attractive mom especially for Kelly too when guys would look at mom and not her. She use to get so frustrated. "Ok well I'll have someone give your children a schedule and map of the school, and you can come back with us to sign some papers." the woman eyed me and Kelly suspiciously I could just feel the judgements rolling off her mind. She looked down and dialed a number. I heard her mumble into the phone then look up at us again. "You two need to go straight down this hallway, then turn to the right into a door that says 'counselors office'" she enunciated the last two words like we were idiots. I shot her a dirty look then scuttled off with Kelly. The school seemed so majestic when I took notice of the walls and the floors and the lockers. Everything was so in order and so clean. I felt a little out of place when I remember my podunk little school with just under 400 students. I don't know why they office lady gave us such detalied instructions because the counselors office was nearly impossible to miss. The doors were painted a bright yellow with huge letters strung across the diameter of them. 'Pinewood Yellow Jackets' it read. Great I was representing a tough looking bee. How intimidating. "Should we knock or just go in?" Kelly reached her hand up to the door then brought it back down to her side. "Walk in?" like kelly I wasn't sure what was the right thing to do. She opened the door and we both walked into the office and saw another lady behind a desk. She seemed much more likable then the other too with her bouncy bright hair and her welcoming smile as we came in. "Well I've never seen you two around here. You must be new?" I wanted to make a sarcastic remark to that but I bit my tongue. "Yes ma'am" my sister spoke before me throwing a dirty look at me. Apparently she must have read my thoughts or something because she knew what I was thinking. "Well we're going to have to help you both with your schedules. What are your grades." "9th and 11th." Kelly refused to let me even get one response in. The lady probably thought I was some social reject.
"Wonderful. Just have a seat and I'll have them set up in a flash." Once again her friendliness seemed to make me feel more welcome. I wanted to give her a hug it was that ridiculous.
Kelly and myself took our seats at this large table and I put my head down. I must have been more tired then I thought because I began to doze off. A sharp pain came across my shoulder as my eyes jolted awake. Kelly sat there scowling at me as I heard a shocked giggle come from across the room. "Well that wasn't very nice." the counselor lady continued to laugh as she handed us both our schedules. "We are into second period so that's what class you'll have to head for." I looked down and read what class it read. Algebra 2. Just perfect. Not only did I have to head to a class full of people who are going to stare at me. I'm also heading to a class that I absolutly loathe. This new school life is starting off just dandy. Apparently Kelly's class was on the opposite part of the school so as soon as we left the counselor's office she grabbed me in a huge hug. "I'm so nervous Jason" she didn't seem anywhere near ready to let go. I wrapped my arms around her and closed my eyes. "It'll be ok, just keep that sweater on." "Why?!" she looked at me incredulously. "All of the girls do this!" "All the girls on tv" I reminded her. "What's so wrong with that?" "Like I said its on tv, you need to get your head out of the clouds." it sounded harsh but it was true. I didn't want my sister to act as if some easy whore. She seemed reluctant but agreed. I felt triumphant so I let go of her and turned and walked to my first class. School has begun and nervousness seemed to boil to a all time high. My new life has begun.
