The Promise

     They sat together on the floor of his empty apartment. "You can stay with me one last night. Call and say you can't go." But she knew she couldn't do that. It was time for her to go and he was leaving early tomorrow anyways. Now was the time for goodbye.
     Sitting there all she could do was curl up just a little closer, so he'd tighten his grasp, and replay all their memories. She had only known him a short month and a half, but it fel like forever. For the past two weeks she had spent every waking and sleeping second with him. She couldn't even imagine rolling over and not seeing his face in the morning.
     Things seemed so perfect, until.. until his ex-fiance returned. And even though he was completely in love with her, he couldn't resist his ex returning. He was marrying her in two months.
     Yet it was she who had been sleeping with him just last night. She felt the knife rip through her heart and stood up to go.
     "Now?" She could see the sadness in his face as she silently nodded. "Listen," he continued "I promise I will see you again, and every time I see you, I will make this same promise."
     "I love you," and to catch her by surprise, he quietly whispered the words back. And she believed him.
     As she walked home, leaving his apartment for the last time, they both knew they wouldn't see each other again. They wanted to believe the promise was true, but knew it couldn't be that way.
     Time passed, and she wanted to convince those around that she let go, but her heart was always thinking of him. Even though he was fading into a dream, her love for him could never be more clear.
