Nan turned back to the stove and I followed Sawyer to the door. He pulled my suitcase out of the backseat, I was thankful I hadn't locked the doors. All the way back to the house he looked pissed, and his shirt was still open. Pressing myself against the wall I closed my eyes and let out a deep breath. Everything would be fine. I was leaving today. When the door opened again I jerked off the wall and on impulse, fixed my hair. Great. I was nervous about how I looked around him. A loud thunk announced my suitcase.
"Sawyer, don't you dare! You carry that up to your room right now! And don't be giving our guest no attitude about it either," Nan scolded from the kitchen. She had good ears. He rolled his eyes and moved to pass me.
"Um, I can-"
"Maddison, you let him carry it. He's a big boy, he can handle it." I bit my lip and shrugged before letting him pass. I followed behind him. Not only did I want to get into actual clothes as fast as possible, I wanted to talk to him without Nan's listening ears.
"I didn't mean to intrude on you..do you prefer Sawyer?" I asked, distracted from my apology.
"You can call me whatever you want Miss Madison." I took a calming breath and clenched my hands. He wasn't making this easy.
"Okay then. I'm sorry about the way that we met. I didn't mean to take your room. And I'm sorry that Nan is making you be nice to me."
"Save it, okay? I have work to do." My jaw fell open as he stalked from the room. Why were the cute ones always such asses?
I ripped open the zipper on my suitcase and yanked out clothes, muttering incomplete words the entire time. I really shouldn't be letting it get to me, I was leaving today. But still, why did he have to be so mean to me? I couldn't undertand why any of this was happening to me. As I dressed I thought about calling my parents, but I realized I should call the airport first. In the end I headed down for breakfast with my phone still in my purse. The moment my feet hit the last step Sawyer scraped his chair back.
"I got work to do Gran, see you later." He kissed her cheek and left, his plate was still half full. I rolled my shoulders in an effort to relax and sat in one of the spare chairs.
"How many pancakes?" Nan questioned.
"Two," I said seeing the giant golden pancakes that she was offering.
"There's bacon and sausage too."
"Wow, this is like a feast," I murmured.
"Breakfast is the most important meal of the day," she said, sitting in the chair across from me.
"I always thought that it was overrated..but I guess I was wrong."
"It's highly possible dear."
"So I was thinking that I would call the airport today before I headed out. But I would still like to repay you if I can."
"I'm sure it will come back to me in time. What's the phrase? Pay it forward."
"Are you sure?" I questioned, bite of pancake half to my mouth.
"Of course."
"Well, thank you. I am sorry that I managed to make Sawyer so upset though."
"Oh, he's not upset."
"He looked pretty upset to me."
"Trust me, I know the boy. He is not upset." I shrugged. He still seemed upset to me. Maybe that was just how he always acted.
"Thank you so much for breakfast." I stretched and patted my stomach. "Everything was wonderful."
"That's nice to hear, Sawyer usually just grunts."
"Mm, lovely. If I offered to help you with the dishes, would you let me?"
"No way. You're the guest."
"Okay. Do you have a phonebook? I should probably go and call the airport now."
"Here. Let me know what they say." I stood, taking the book, and headed back up the stairs.
